Rangers place Tony DeAngelo on waivers in stunning move

Tony DeAngelo has hit the wire.

The Rangers placed the defenseman on waivers Sunday, the team announced, a day after DeAngelo was on the ice for four goals against in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Penguins.

DeAngelo was not skating with the Rangers during their Sunday afternoon, as a mix of Brendan Smith, Anthony Bitetto and Libor Hajek made up their third defensive pairing.

Coach David Quinn had DeAngelo, 25, for the second game of the season after he had taken a third-period unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for slamming the penalty box door and yelling at referees after getting hit with a holding penalty. He sat out the next game as well before getting back into the lineup for the last five games.

DeAngelo, whom the Rangers gave a two-year, $9.6 million contract to in October, played 20:28 on Saturday night while paired with Smith, who was for the entire third period.
