Deshaun Watson takes step in breaking up with Texans

Deshaun Watson, athlete.

The disgruntled quarterback removed all Texans references and logos from his Instagram and Twitter bios. Where there once was a Texans photo, according to the Houston Chronicle, Watson now identifies himself as just an “athlete” on Instagram.

On an Instagram story published to his account Sunday night to promote “a Pro Bowl unlike any other,” Watson identifies himself as “Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans.” It is unclear when he recorded the video message.

Watson’s Twitter profile photo is of him in a black sweatshirt holding up multi-colored Nike cleats.

Watson’s displeasure with the direction of the Texans boiled over after the season during the searches for a new general manager and head coach. He asked for a trade, only five months after signing a four-year, $156 million extension.

New general manager Nick Caserio said he has “zero interest in trading the player.”

Removing all references to a team on social media has become a popular new way for athletes who want out of a current situation to convey their message and create distance from the team affiliation.

Some in his situation take it to the next level by scrubbing all past images, too, but Watson did not go to that extreme: Old images of Watson in Texans gear remain on his account.
