Manchester United ended Manchester City’s 21-match winning run with a 2–0 win at the Etihad on Sunday. Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw each scored at the start of the half to prevent City’s 28-match unbeaten run in all competitions. The win helped Ole Gunnar Solskar’s United leapfrog Leicester City to finish second and remain 11 points behind City. It was United’s first win in four matches in all competitions and extended their league matches to an unbeaten 22 runs. With this victory, Solaskar won three consecutive matches in the Etihad. City enjoyed more possession, had more shots on target but lacked the finishing touch. The only time the home side jointly tested joint goalkeeper Dean Henderson was when Oleksandra Zinchenko forced Henderson into a diving save after 24 minutes. Others shot either straight or over. Ilkay Gundogan had two openings but both times he put the ball directly into the goalkeeper’s hands, while Kevin De Bruyne looked like an out and Riyad Mahraj put one up. United went ahead early in the 1 minute when Gabriel Jesus trapped Anthony Marshall inside the City penalty box. Jesus, who had captured possession inside his own half, was eager to win it back and provoked Marshall in the process when the United striker stood in line to take a shot. Fernandes stepped in and gave United the lead.

Visitors could be there after the second minute when Shaw found himself with a place inside the City box. But his shot was directly on Ederson. The United left-back would eventually find his goal in five minutes, ending a second half following a move that began one-on-one with Marcus Rashford.
