Argentina on Sunday emerged the winner of the Qatar 2022 World Cup after beating France via penalties.

South American side won its first World Cup title since 1986 when the tied soccer match against France went into penalty points after France made a stunning comeback and ran the final FIFA tournament game into overtime.

The historic game marks Argentinian soccer legend and team captain Lionel Messi’s first World Cup win. Messi, who lost with his team in his last World Cup appearance in 2014 against Germany, scored the first goal of the game with a penalty kick against France. He plans on retiring from international play after the match.

Less than 15 minutes after Messi’s goal, Angel Di Maria scored another point for Argentina.

France made a stunning comeback with less than 10 minutes left in the 90-minute match when Kylian Mbappe tied the match with two goals, bringing the game into 30 minutes of overtime.

Both France and Argentina won a point in overtime, bringing the game 3–3 before Argentina’s ultimate victory through penalty kicks, preventing France from becoming the first team to win consecutive World Cup titles in 60 years.
