David de Gea, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, is confident that the team can add more trophies to their Carabao Cup win this season after defeating Newcastle United at Wembley.

The win gave de Gea, who kept a clean sheet to break Peter Schmeichel’s record for the most shutouts at the club with 181, another medal to add to his collection. However, with the club still in contention for success in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League this season, the Spaniard is optimistic about their prospects.

De Gea spoke about the team’s winning mentality, stating, “We are still in three competitions, and we have the chance to win more trophies.”

He also acknowledged the emotional significance of the win, saying, “I’m emotional because it has been so long without a trophy. I’m happy here for the fans.”

Reflecting on his personal achievement, de Gea expressed his excitement at breaking Schmeichel’s record but emphasized that it was a collective effort.

He said, “To win the final and break the record in the same day is unbelievable… People are having an impact from the bench too.”

De Gea was one of only two players from the team that won the Carabao Cup against Southampton in 2017 who were included in Sunday’s matchday squad, the other being Marcus Rashford.

Despite this turnover, de Gea believes that United is ready to compete for more titles, calling the Carabao Cup victory “the start of a new era.”

He added, “The team is ready for everything… We showed today we can win trophies. [We will] enjoy the moment but [we will] go again.”

As Manchester United competes in multiple competitions, de Gea’s confidence and experience will be critical to their success. The team’s next challenge is a Europa League clash with AC Milan on March 11th.
