You’re no longer confident, Atiku’s camp mocks ‘Obidients’

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, Presidential Management Committee, Mr Uloka Chibuike, has said that the supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, are no longer confident in their ability to win the 2023 presidential election.

Chibuike said the Obidients are no longer at ease as they have been swept away because the status quo had changed for the PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s sure victory in the 2023 presidential election.

He made the remarks in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Wednesday.

Chibuike declared that at the moment, no presidential candidate had more support and acceptance in the country, especially in Anambra State, than the former vice president.

He added that in recent weeks, the PDP had welcomed hundreds of returning members and thousands of sympathisers from other political parties, with more expected to join Atiku’s crusade in the coming weeks.

The statement read in part, “With the 2023 presidential election a few months away, there is no doubt that Nigeria, especially Anambra State is gradually returning to the status quo with the PDP’s victory more probable.

“The PDP has taken over the streets, nooks and crannies of the country and the minority Labour Party supporters who are still standing with Peter Obi are no longer at ease or confident in their ability to win the election.

“The Obi strategy has long been manipulating our youths using lies, deceit, blackmail, sentiments and emotions. The life span of lies and deceit is short, and Obi’s unpopular Labour Party is currently suffering for support in Anambra State and other parts of the South-East, because his deceit has grown stale over time and lacks the strength to compete with the PDP’s influence and legitimacy in the state.

“Following the appointments and inauguration of the Presidential Council and Management Committee, led by the duo of Senator Ben Obi, CON, and Professor Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, who have through their leadership and daily engagements, rejuvenated the commitment of party faithful, affiliates and supporters, the PDP has become the only alternative in the state and is confident of delivering 85 percent of Anambra votes to Atiku in 2023.

“Election is about numbers, and so far, only the PDP can boast of the numbers to win the presidential election in the state.

“As more people are becoming aware of Peter Obi’s weakness in the nation’s polity and his inability to gain majority votes throughout different regions of the country, his mystification is no longer having the desired effect.

“Our people have abandoned Peter Obi and his endeavour to retrogress the South-East politically as they gradually come to the realisation that throwing away our votes won’t be best for the survival of Ndi-Igbo in the country’s politics.

“Like we have always done since 1999, Anambra State will no doubt return to status quo with the PDP and ensure that the state leads in front of the anticipated victory of the former vice president.

“Only a few of Peter Obi’s personal assistants, family members, and misguided individuals are left in his ineffective Labour Party, and their combined votes are inadequate to overthrow the PDP or challenge Atiku Abubakar’s victory in any local government of the state. Anambra is the LP’s to lose.”

    Chelsea will win EPL -Koulibaly

    kalidou koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly has boldly claimed that Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season by finishing above Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Senegal international defender moved to Stamford Bridge from Napoli over the summer and has seen his former club put themselves in contention for a domestic crown in Italy. Koulibaly is hoping to see his new employers do the same, with the 31-year-old centre-half convinced that he can “write history” in west London.

Koulibaly has told Corriere della Sera when asked about the battle for top spot in the Premier League: “It will be Chelsea at the end of the season, I want to write history here.”

He added on an eventful start to his debut campaign in England: “I arrive with a coach who wanted me at all costs, and then he leaves. Both [Thomas] Tuchel and [Graham] Potter play with the three-man defences, I was used to a four with Napoli. It’s another string to my bow, you never stop learning. I knew I was going to have a hard time, and that’s proved true. Even [Gianfranco] Zola and [Didier] Drogba had anticipated that for me.”

Koulibaly has taken in 11 appearances for Chelsea so far, with one goal recorded and a red card collected across those outings for a side that is still searching for consistency.

A derby date with table-topping Arsenal is next on the domestic agenda for Chelsea, with the Gunners due at Stamford Bridge on Sunday after both sides have taken in midweek European competition.

Dessers doubtful for Costa Rica, Portugal friendlies

    Crril Dessers

Super Eagles striker, Cyriel Dessers, could miss this month’s Nigeria’s friendlies against Costa Rica and Portugal after he suffered an injury in Cremonese’s 0-0 draw against Udinese last week.

Dessers sealed a €6.5million transfer from Genk to Cremonese during the summer. Unfortunately, since he arrived in Italy, he has struggled to hit the mark.

The 27-year-old has struck just two goals in twelve appearances this season. He has been part of a Cremonese side that has failed to win a game in the  Serie A this season.

Cremonese coach Massimiliano Alvini selected Dessers to lead the line when his side welcomed Udinese on Saturday.

However, the Nigerian striker left the pitch after just 22 minutes after he picked up an injury.

As of the time of this report, the extent of Dessers’ injury is unknown, but it could effectively rule him out of Nigeria’ ms games against Costa Rica and Portugal on the 10th and 17th of November.

Nonetheless, there are appropriate replacements, as Terem Moffi, Victor Osimhen, and Henry Onyekuru are in form.

    Eagles-eligible player defends Celtic move

Super Eagles-eligible player, Moritz Jenz, has revealed how his move to Scottish Premiership champions Glasgow Celtic came about.

The Hoops signed the German-born player on a season-long loan, with an option to buy him outright from his parent club Lorient included in the deal.

Jenz was long on the radar of Celtic before they were able to get a deal over the line in July.

The 23-year-old , central defender reunited with his former teammate Matt O’Riley, whom he knows from their time together at the Fulham Academy in England.

He began his Celtic career in brilliant fashion, scoring on his debut against Ross County and netted with an overhead kick in the next league game against Kilmarnock FC.

On how his move came about, Jenz said to Celtic View Podcast: “It was even the last transfer window I was supposed to come but things didn’t go that way.

“I was disappointed because I really wanted to come. Suddenly Matt came here as well and I was even more annoyed by it because he plays for this amazing club, I was jealous, Celtic you know big stadium, fantastic club.

“We kept speaking, Matt kept telling me how the club is, how the manager is and about his idea and philosophy. You get immediately like a really good feeling, this is a project I want to be in, this is a club I want to be in.

“They obviously got in touch again and I was very happy about it because this is good and I had a fantastic talk with the manager.”

Jenz revealed that he remained in touch with Celtic after his proposed deal fell through last summer and was delighted to get another opportunity to join the club.

“You never know in football how things go with the decisions at clubs but there was always like communication between officials of the clubs and my agent.

“There was always a scenario that it could happen and luckily it happened. They were very patient and I was very patient as well and the timing was perfect. ”

Jenz has established himself as a first team regular at Celtic, having started fifteen of their nineteen matches in all competitions since his arrival at Parkhead.

  • Invasive malaria mosquito spreading in Africa, researchers warn

Invasive malaria mosquito spreading in Africa, researchers warn

New evidence has emerged that an invasive species of malaria-carrying mosquito from Asia is spreading in Africa, where it could pose a “unique” threat to tens of millions of city-dwellers, researchers warned Tuesday.

In Africa, home to more than 95 per cent of the world’s 627,000 malaria deaths in 2020, the parasite is mostly spread in rural areas preferred by the dominant Anopheles gambiae group of mosquitoes.

However, the Anopheles stephensi mosquito, which has long been the main malaria spreader in Indian and Iranian cities, can breed in urban water supplies, meaning it can thrive during the dry season. It is also resistant to commonly used insecticides.

Modelling research in 2020 found that if Anopheles stephensi spread widely in Africa it would put more than 126 million people in 44 cities at risk of malaria.

Djibouti became the first African nation to detect Anopheles stephensi in 2012. It had been close to eradicating malaria with just 27 reported cases that year.

However the number has skyrocketed since Anopheles stephensi’s arrival, hitting 73,000 cases in 2020, according to the World Health Organization.

On Tuesday, researchers revealed the first evidence that a malaria outbreak in neighbouring Ethiopia earlier this year was caused by Anopheles stephensi.

In the eastern Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa, a transport hub between the capital Addis Ababa and Djibouti, 205 malaria cases were reported in all of 2019.

However this year more than 2,400 cases were reported between January and May. The outbreak was unprecedented because it took place during the country’s dry season when malaria has usually been rare.

    – ‘Surprising’ –

As the numbers were rising, Fitsum Girma Tadesse, a molecular biologist at Ethiopia’s Armauer Hansen Research Institute, and other researchers “jumped in to investigate,” he told AFP.

They quickly determined that “Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes are responsible for the increase in cases,” Tadesse said.

They linked Anopheles stephensi to the infections of the patients, and also found the mosquitoes — carrying malaria — in nearby water containers.

Tadesse warned that the mosquito’s preference for open water tanks, common across many African cities, “makes it unique”.

The research, which has not been peer-reviewed, was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene being held this week in Seattle, US.

Also presented at the conference were early findings that identified Anopheles stephensi at 64 percent of 60 test sites in nine states of neighbouring Sudan.

“In some instances, we have found that up to 94 percent of households have stephensi” mosquitoes nearby, Hmooda Kafy, the head of the integrated vector management department at Sudan’s health ministry, said in a statement.

The findings come after the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research confirmed in July it had detected Anopheles stephensi in West Africa for the first time.

Sarah Zohdy, an Anopheles stephensi specialist at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told AFP it was “surprising” that the mosquito was detected so far west, as the focus had been on the Horn of Africa.

    – ‘A major threat’ –

In the last couple of months it has been shown that Anopheles stephensi “is no longer a potential threat” in Africa, Zohdy said.

“In the Ethiopian context, this is a threat — we now have data to show that,” said Zohdy, who also works with the US President’s Malaria Initiative, a partner of the Dire Dawa study.

“The evidence now exists to suggest that this is something that the world needs to act on,” she added.

Anopheles stephensi has also been reportedly detected in Somalia, according to the WHO, which in September launched an initiative aimed at stopping the spread of the mosquito in Africa.

Because Anopheles stephensi can thrive in urban water tanks, “you get a shift from a seasonal disease to one that can persist year-round,” Zohdy said.

That shift poses “a major threat” to recent gains made against malaria, she added.

Deaths from malaria had more than halved from the start of the century to 2017 — largely due to insecticide-treated mosquito nets, testing and drugs — before progress stalled during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zohdy called for increased surveillance to find out exactly how far Anopheles stephensi has spread across the continent.

“The true extent of the distribution of the mosquito is unknown,” she said.

NYSC introduces new fitness policy for corps members

    Sharon Osaji

The National Youth Service Corps has announced that prospective corps members will henceforth be required to present fitness certificates from recognised public health facilities at orientation camps across the country.

The NYSC noted that the certificate of fitness will become a requirement for registration at camps.

The Director, Press and Public Relations of the NYSC, Eddy Megwa, said in a statement that the new policy begins with the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Orientation Course.

The director said the fitness test is to help the scheme ascertain the health status of corpS members and to fish out those who lie about their medical conditions.

Megwa said, “In order to avail the scheme credible information on their health status and also protect them from exploitation by unscrupulous persons.

“It is pertinent to note that the NYSC Orientation Camp Clinics across the nation are managed by the National Health Insurance Authority with the supervision of consultants from tertiary health institutions.

“In view of the regimentation and physical demands of some activities of the NYSC orientation programme, the management of the scheme introduced the presentation of a Certificate of Fitness from recognised public health facilities by prospective corps members as a requirement for registration at the orientation camp.

“The essence is to enable camp officials to manage those who are not fit to undertake certain activities in the camp. This has been largely misunderstood, leading to extortion of some prospective corps members by fraudulent individuals in their bid to secure such documents some of which may not stand a test of integrity.“

  • Challenges of occupational safety in traffic management

Challenges of occupational safety in traffic management

    Taofiq Adebayo

There is no job without its inherent risks and potential hazards. However, those hazards and degrees of risk exposures vary as the job specifications require. Safety in each occupation may then become challenging when dealing directly and physically with the public whose temperaments are different. The challenge may even become worse given the fact that ensuring compliance with traffic laws sometimes comes with enforcement.

If everyone, on grounds of fear of attacks, avoids picking up jobs that will involve direct involvement with irate motorists due to enforcement of traffic laws, then no one will be available to maintain law and order in the state. As required by law, traffic managers are usually greeted with resistance by lawbreakers when they carry out their statutory duties on the road. These lawbreakers, in an attempt to escape the punishment stipulated by the law, resort to physical assault on the traffic managers. These traffic law enforcers and traffic controllers become more vulnerable to attack because they do not bear arms to protect themselves. Everyone must understand that traffic managers are positioned on the road to act as checks and balances to road users.

It is therefore important that, in the overall interest of everyone, all road users must ensure the safety of traffic managers and controllers by adhering to rules and regulations while using the road. If any motorist is aggrieved or feels dissatisfied by the action of a traffic official, he or she is expected to seek redress by making a formal report, not via an attack on the officer. Civility, not violence, will peacefully resolve issues.

The safety of traffic controllers and managers lies strongly in the hands of all road users. This safety can be achieved only by traffic personnel and road users in general. No matter how security-conscious the traffic officials are, they remain unsafe at their points of duty if all road users choose to disobey traffic laws, and with the intention of attacking them when road users called to order.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority personnel, whose primary responsibility is to control and manage traffic on Lagos roads, are duty-bound to carry out their duties despite the attendant risks and hazards, which may range from injuries to even death. LASTMA officials, without bearing arms, still have to directly relate with irate and violent traffic offenders sometimes.

The major occupational safety challenge encountered by LASTMA officials is incessant attacks by recalcitrant traffic law violators whose only way of expressing their dissatisfaction or displeasure after being booked and issued a court referral ticket for an infraction is via an assault on traffic managers. Some LASTMA personnel, while on their lawful duties, have been maimed and paralysed. Others never survived to tell their stories as they were killed as some violent motorists used dangerous weapons on them or knocked them down. Records and cases of violent attacks on LASTMA officials abound as the agency has lost many of its men to this rising ugly trend. We need all hands on deck to curb the menace to ensure the safety of traffic personnel.

The state government isn’t folding its hands at this ugly trend as security is being beefed up around LASTMA officials across the state with the deployment of police officers attached to them for seamless operation. There is also an insurance package for any LASTMA personnel who die while on duty call.

Traffic management and transportation, which comes first on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s six-point developmental agenda, code-named THEMES, is an indication that traffic management and control are given utmost attention. In 2019, as a boost to the morale of LASTMA personnel, the governor announced an increment in their salaries with an inclusion of hazard allowance. The upward review of their take-home was because Sanwo-Olu paid attention to the welfare and safety of these traffic managers.

LASTMA officials have also been charged by the welfare unit of the agency to regularly go for check-ups to ensure that attention is paid to their health. While serving the public, they are to imbibe the culture of paying attention to their health which will help to identify any illness quickly through early diagnosis for proper treatment or management.

Traffic snarls and build-ups still being experienced in some parts of the state are a reflection of the attendant outcome of non-compliance with traffic laws. So, every law-abiding resident of the state must comply with traffic laws and regulations.
