
ABOUT 500 chess players across Africa are expected to participate in the first Jubilee International Youth Chess Festival scheduled to commence today at the Glory Arena, Redemption camp.
According to the project coordinator, Mr Lekan Adeyemi, vice president, International Chess Federation, who is also the tournament coordinator, chess players from Ghana, Gabon, Togo, Cameroon
and Benin Republic have arrived for the four-day FIDE approved tournament.
The tournament which is being put together by the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s Directorate of Sports and Directorate of Teens and Children Education in conjunction with PROCHESS Inc will see winners and the best players represent the country in Africa and world tournaments in future.
The tournament which is meant for male and female chess players within the ages of 19 years would be the biggest ever in Africa.
“The tournament is aimed at promoting the game among the youth as well as adequate exposure they deserved. We are fully prepared for the tournament and we have put logistics in place to have a hitch-free tournament,” Adeyemi, a former President of the Nigeria Chess Federation said.
