Tiger Woods to miss US PGA Championship after ankle surgery

Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, has had successful ankle surgery to treat arthritis caused by an earlier injury.

Woods, aged 47, withdrew from the 2023 Masters earlier this month due to plantar fasciitis, but his ankle issue arose from a previous fracture of his talus – a bone in the ankle joint.

The surgery, a subtalar fusion procedure, took place in New York on 20 April, and he now appears highly unlikely to compete in next month’s US PGA Championship.

Woods has battled serious injuries, including a car accident in February 2021 that threatened amputation of his leg. He returned to action 14 months later to compete in the Masters, finishing 47th, but subsequently withdrew from the US PGA after a third-round 79, did not play in the US Open, and missed the cut in the Open Championship.

Although he has acknowledged that he can only play a few events each year, he is targeting majors and tournaments with personal significance.

The surgery has raised further questions about Woods’ ability to compete at the highest level in future.

A statement on his social media channels said the surgery was successful, and he is now recovering and planning his rehabilitation.

“Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.

“It was performed by Dr Martin O’Malley at HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He has determined the surgery to be successful.

“Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.

Man United’s Christian Eriksen out for ‘extended period’ with ankle injury

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen could miss most of the remainder of the season because of an ankle injury, the team said Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Denmark international sustained the injury during United’s 3-1 win against Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday.

United said he will be sidelined for “an extended period”,  likely until late April or early May.

“However, there is hope that Christian can return in time to play a role in the final stages of the season,” the team said.

The midfielder has become a key figure under new United manager Erik ten Hag, making 31 appearances this season.

The former Tottenham and Inter Milan player suffered a cardiac arrest on the field at the European Championship in 2021 and needed to be resuscitated with a defibrillator.

He had a cardioverter-defibrillator fitted and made his return to top-flight soccer a year ago when he joined Premier League club Brentford.

His performances for the London club led to a move to United last summer.

England captain Kane to have ankle scan

England captain Harry Kane is due to have a scan on his ankle, two days before his country faces the United States in the World Cup, reports said on Wednesday.

Kane left the Khalifa International Stadium on Monday with a strapping to his ankle after the 6-2 win over Iran but took part in a light training session on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate’s side faces the Americans on Friday knowing that a victory would guarantee them a place in the knockout stage.

Kane, the top scorer at the last World Cup in Russia, has a history of ankle injuries.
