Stop booing Messi, others, PSG captain urges fans

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) captain Marquinhos has called on the club’s fans to stop booing Lionel Messi, who is certain to depart the French capital once the season concludes.

Messi’s two-year contract with PSG is nearing its end, and negotiations for a new agreement have not reached a successful resolution. The player himself has expressed a desire to return to his former club Barcelona, where he spent over two decades.

Despite competition from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia and financial constraints, reports indicate that Barcelona is now “extremely confident” about the potential reunion.

While Barcelona cannot match the lucrative €400 million per year offer from Saudi Arabia, Camp Nou officials are working diligently to make room for Messi within their wage structure. However, for the time being, Messi remains a PSG player and has recently faced criticism from supporters.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was briefly suspended by the club due to a trip to Saudi Arabia, was subjected to boos from the crowd at Parc des Princes during last weekend’s 5-0 victory over Ajaccio.

As PSG prepares to face Auxerre away from home on Sunday night, Marquinhos has cautioned fans against targeting Messi or any other individual player. The captain’s appeal seeks to maintain harmony and support within the team, urging fans to respect and appreciate the contributions of all players, including Messi, during their time at the club.

“I always respect protests when they are peaceful, at the times and places where it is necessary,” he told L’Equipe.

“Above all, I ask the supporters not to target one player or another. It must always be collective. A player doesn’t walk on his own, he’s not going to do anything on his own.

‘Big names don’t play on pitch’, says Guinea Bissau captain Nigeria win

Jorge Nogueira, captain of Guinea Bissau has attributed his team’s 1-0 victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria to their mental strength and not being intimidated by Nigeria’s big names.

Nogueira said this during a post-match conference after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

He further mentioned that the poor quality of the pitch also complicated issues for his team, but they were resolute and optimistic.

“First and foremost, I will like to dedicate this victory to the good people of Guinea Bissau.

“We respect all Nigerian players, but the truth is that names don’t play on the pitch.

“So, they (Super Eagles) tried to do everything to break the will and spirit of our team as they created a lot of scoring opportunities, but our defence was up to the task.

“We remained strong, resolute and were optimistic that we could cause an upset here in Abuja,” he said.

Guinea Bissau currently tops Group A with seven points, while Nigeria drops to second place with six points. The reverse fixture will take place on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco.

  • Mbappe makes winning start as France captain

Mbappe makes winning start as France captain

Kylian Mbappe marked his first game as France captain on Friday with two goals and an assist as the World Cup finalists romped to a 4-0 win against a depleted Netherlands side in a Euro 2024 qualifier in Paris.

Mbappe has succeeded long-standing France skipper Hugo Lloris and the new era got off to a flying start as the Paris Saint-Germain superstar set up the pink-haired Antoine Griezmann to score inside two minutes.

Dayot Upamecano bundled in the second goal in the eighth minute and Mbappe got his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-0 before the midway point in the first half.

Mbappe wrapped up the victory in emphatic fashion with two minutes remaining before the Netherlands’ Memphis Depay had a stoppage-time penalty saved by goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

It was a display of ruthless efficiency from Didier Deschamps’ side against a Dutch team missing several key players after a virus swept through their squad.

They can at least console themselves in the knowledge that their toughest assignment in qualifying Group B is out of the way and their next game is at home to Gibraltar on Monday.

The French now head to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland but it is going to take something remarkable for them to fail to qualify for next year’s Euro given the top two teams in each group go through.

This was France’s first game since their World Cup final defeat on penalties by Argentina just over three months ago.

There were four changes to Deschamps’ team from that game, with Lloris and centre-back Raphael Varane having retired -– they were honoured on the Stade de France pitch before kick-off -– while Ousmane Dembele is injured and Olivier Giroud started on the bench.

In came AC Milan’s Maignan in goal and Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate in central defence, while there were starts for Kingsley Coman and Randal Kolo Muani, two players who came off the bench in the Doha final.

The Netherlands, with Ronald Koeman back for a second spell as coach, were without Cody Gakpo, Matthijs de Ligt, Sven Botman, Denzel Dumfries and Frenkie de Jong for a variety of reasons.

    – Ruthless efficiency –

France simply blew them away in an astonishing start.

Mbappe has promised to play a unifying role for his country after taking over the armband, although he also admitted that Griezmann was disappointed at being overlooked for the captaincy by Deschamps.

Usually when Mbappe gets the ball on the left side of the box he shapes to shoot towards the far corner.

That he didn’t in the second minute was telling, as he instead chose to play a square pass for the arriving Griezmann to finish first-time.

Griezmann, reprising the midfield role he operated so remarkably at the World Cup, then set up the second.

His whipped free-kick from the right was not properly dealt with by Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, and Bayern Munich defender Upamecano was left with an easy finish.

There was a touch of real class about the third goal as Kolo Muani’s decision not to touch Aurelien Tchouameni’s through ball completely did for the Netherlands defence and left Mbappe through to beat the goalkeeper.

France were 3-0 up with barely 30 per cent possession, and Koeman made a substitution before half-time, replacing Ajax midfielder Kenneth Taylor with Manchester United target man Wout Weghorst.

Only a fine Cillessen save from a Konate header stopped France from scoring again before the break, and substitute Moussa Diaby then had a goal disallowed late on.

However, Mbappe sealed the win two minutes from time, pouncing on a loose ball before firing a shot through the legs of Jurrien Timber and into the bottom corner.

The evening concluded with Maignan stopping Depay’s penalty, which had been awarded for an Upamecano handball.

Konaté backs Deschamps’ decision to name Mbappé as France captain

Liverpool center-back Ibrahima Konaté has voiced his support for Didier Deschamps’ decision to appoint Kylian Mbappe as the new captain of the France national team, replacing Hugo Lloris.

Speaking to Eurosport, Konaté said, “Even if I had a say in this, it would not change a thing. It’s the coach’s decision but I’m very happy…Honestly, Kylian deserves it. We’re unanimous on this.”

Konaté, who has played alongside Mbappe for France, praised the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s credentials, both on and off the pitch, saying, “He’s a very good leader, on and off the pitch. He deserves it with what he’s done at the World Cup and with PSG as well.”

The Liverpool defender also defended Mbappe against claims that his success has made him cocky or condescending, saying, “He’s a young lad who loves to laugh and have fun, nothing more. He’s a very good person… Of course, he will be a good skipper.”

Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain after Mbappe’s appointment, but there have been reports of the Atlético Madrid man being frustrated at being overlooked for the top job.

Konaté, however, played down these suggestions, saying, “I did not see him sulking at all. Besides, it’s his birthday,” referring to Griezmann’s 32nd birthday.

Pirès surprised by Deschamps appointment of Mbappe as France captain

France’s new captaincy decision has left former World Cup and European Championship winner, Robert Pirès, puzzled.

The French Football Federation has appointed Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe as the new captain for Les Bleus, with Antoine Griezmann being the vice-captain.

According to reports, Mbappe was informed of his appointment by coach Didier Deschamps after a dinner and will lead the team in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

However, Pirès does not believe that Mbappe was the logical choice for the position, and expressed his surprise at the decision.

“A logical choice? Honestly, no. Considering his longevity, what he’s done down the years, I was expecting it to be Griezmann.

“Antoine is Didier’s stalwart, the one with the most caps in a row (74). It’s a lack of respect towards Antoine. Although I must stress I have nothing against Kylian.“

Pirès suggested that the captaincy should have been given to Griezmann until Euro 2024 before handing it to Mbappé in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. He praised Griezmann’s performance at the last World Cup, where he was the best and most consistent player.

The decision to appoint Mbappe over Griezmann has reportedly caused tension, with reports suggesting that Griezmann is considering retiring from international football.

    Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris has retired from international football after leading France to a second consecutive World Cup final.

Goalkeeper Lloris is Les Bleus’ most-capped player and has captained the team since 2012.

His retirement comes on the same day Wales and Tottenham legend Gareth Bale announced his retirement.

The Spurs goalkeeper skippered his country at six major tournaments, including three World Cups.

Lloris was the man between the posts as France won their second world title in 2018, having lost in the final of their home Euro 2016 two years earlier.

With Lloris still in goal, France returned to the World Cup final at Qatar 2022, only to lose on penalties to Argentina.

Having taken time to announce a decision following that defeat, Lloris confirmed his retirement in an interview with L’Equipe on Monday.

“There comes a time when you have to know how to hand over,” he said.

“I don’t want to own the position. I’ve always said and repeated that the France team doesn’t belong to anyone, and we all have to make sure that this is the case, me first.

“I think that there remains a team ready to continue, and there is also a goalkeeper who is ready.”

Maignan appeared set to push Lloris for the number one shirt in Qatar, only to join a long list of France stars who missed the tournament through injury.

Lloris kept only a single clean sheet at the finals, although that came in the semi-final against Morocco.

He retires with eight World Cup clean sheets, behind only countryman Fabien Barthez and Peter Shilton (both 10) since 1966.

“I’d rather go out at the top than wait for a decline or face too much competition.

“There is also a family choice;I feel the need to spend more time with my wife and children.

England captain Kane to have ankle scan

England captain Harry Kane is due to have a scan on his ankle, two days before his country faces the United States in the World Cup, reports said on Wednesday.

Kane left the Khalifa International Stadium on Monday with a strapping to his ankle after the 6-2 win over Iran but took part in a light training session on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate’s side faces the Americans on Friday knowing that a victory would guarantee them a place in the knockout stage.

Kane, the top scorer at the last World Cup in Russia, has a history of ankle injuries.
