World Diabetes Day: Patients cry out as drug prices soar

    By Agency

As the global community today marks World Diabetes Day, Nigerians suffering from the health condition have decried the astronomical hike in the prices of their medications, lamenting that it has drained their pockets.

Some patients in Abia State in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Umuahia, complained that diabetic treatment is expensive and called for government’s support.

Diabetes is a debilitating disease in which the insulin is either not adequate or poorly functional until one has excess of blood sugar which begins to destroy other tissues in the eyes, the brain, the skin, and all the blood vessels and the immune system is hindered in a negative way.

World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14 every year.

The global observance is to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on the health of people and to
highlight the opportunities to strengthen the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes.

The day has “Access to Diabetes Care” as the theme for 2023.

A patient, Mr Enyinnaya Nwokocha, said he had been on insulin injection since he was diagnosed with the
disease more than eight years ago without getting any assistance in the procurement of the injection.

He said “today, I have seen the doctor for this week, but I’m just waiting for my wife so that we can go back home.

“I come from Isiala Ngwa South every Monday to see the doctor, and it has not been easy for me,
considering the distance and the cost of transportation.

“The drugs are quite expensive and we don’t even see them in my community, so I always look for money whenever
I’m coming to purchase it because the doctor placed me on a weekly visit.”

Another patient who simply identified herself as Mama Uche from Ozu Abam in Bende Local Government Area,
also lamented her ordeals in assessing treatment.

The septuagenarian complained that she had been on diabetes medication for the past five years without any meaningful improvement.

She said “my doctor has told me the food I should eat and the ones I should avoid.

“I urinate frequently, especially at night, in spite of taking my drugs but the condition worsens any time I skip my medication.

“The original drugs which I normally purchase at the pharmacy whenever I am in Umuahia are very expensive, and as a widow, I don’t
    have that kind of money.

“I wish the government would assist us in terms of drugs because they are costly.”

Mr Chijioke Nwakanma who said he was diagnosed with diabetes about five years ago, also said that the drugs are not only expensive, but scarce.

He said “I am aware that the foreign drugs are more effective than the local ones but I usually buy the local ones because they are cheaper.

“The drug dealers told us that the high cost is due to the high exchange of naira to dollar and that is why I am calling on the government to help
    us to reduce the cost.”

A pharmacist, Mr Fortune Moses, said that the primary challenge in the control of diabetes as a metabolic disease is financial burden.

According to him, some of the patients do not really know what they are suffering, even when they know, they prefer traditional medication.

In terms of financial challenges, the expensive drugs such as dapagliflozin(Farxiga) and empagliflozin (Jardiance), which are foreign
brands, work more than the cheap ones.

“Due to the financial burden, patients around the locality go for metformin (glucophage) which is sold for N240 per card.

“That is not to say that the cheap brand does not work, but the foreign counterpart works faster,” he said.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are two main forms of the disease. People with type 1 diabetes typically make none of their own insulin and therefore require insulin injections for survival. People with type 2 diabetes, the form that comprises some 90 per cent of all cases, usually produce their own insulin, but not enough or they are unable to use it properly. People with type 2 diabetes are typically overweight and sedentary.

According to the Diabetes Association of Nigeria , the prevalence in Nigeria varies from 0.65 per cent in rural Mangu (North), 6.8 per cent in Port Harcourt to 11.0 per cent in urban Lagos, and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality.

A professor of Medicine and consultant endocrinologist,College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Olufemi Fasanmade, said that diabetes is very common in Nigeria and from records; the country has the second-highest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa.

He said there is inadequate awareness because only a few people are aware of it due to the fact that it is not something that attracts much attention.

The expert said that the prices of any drugs in Nigeria are not affordable especially if they are manufactured outside the country.

World Environment Day: Prioritise investment in environmental migration – IOM

    Sodiq Ojuroungbe

The Director General of International Organization for Migration, Antonio Vitorino has urged world leaders to invest heavily in environmental migration, lamenting that disasters are increasing in frequency and impacting human mobility.

While bemoaning the accelerating deterioration of the environment, he noted that the climate is changing at unprecedented speed.

IOM is part of the United Nations System as the leading inter-governmental organization since 1951, promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, with 175 member states and a presence in over 100 countries.

In a video to mark the 2023 World Environment Day, the IOM’s DG said environmental migration is a new reality, adding that investment in protecting the environment will help reduce risks of displacements and other related hazards for future generations.

He, however, called on all governments and parties to address the reality of the climate crisis by providing concrete solutions, “For people who are already on the move, for people who will want or must move, and for these who want to stay due to the adverse effects of climate change and environmental degradation.”

“The deterioration of the environment is indeed accelerating. The climate is changing at unprecedented speed. Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity, impacting human mobility in many ways every day. We have witnessed extreme floods, severe droughts, cyclones, wildfires, and storms in every region of the world.

“In the past decade, people have been internally displaced due to disasters and 2022 was no exception.

“Last year alone, a record number of 32.6 million new internal disaster displacements were registered. Environmental migration is our reality. We must invest in protecting the environment today to reduce the risks of displacements due to climate and environmental-related hazards for future generations. And ensure that when necessary, their movements are safe.”

Commenting on the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Beat Plastic Pollution’, the IOM DG advised countries around the world to work together in accelerating climate actions to reduce environmental pollution.

He said, “We all need to work together to accelerate climate action, reduce environmental pollution, and guarantee that our future generations enjoy their right to a clean and healthy environment.

“On world environment day, I joined the voices of the UN leaders calling to respect and protect the environment and beat plastic pollution. We need to take action now for people and nature.”

  • World Bicycle Day: Embrace cycling to improve personal health – Physician

World Bicycle Day: Embrace cycling to improve personal health – Physician

A General Practitioner, Dr Tunji Akintade, has advised Nigerians to embrace cycling to improve personal health and well-being.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos during an event to commemorate the 2023 World Bicycle Day.

World Bicycle Day is celebrated annually on June 3 to encourage more people to choose bicycles as a mode of transport and to reduce traffic congestion, fossil fuel, and carbon emissions while improving personal health and well-being.

The theme for World Bicycle Day 2023 is, ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future’.

Dr, Akintade noted that promoting cycling in Nigeria was critical to reducing the high burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and to lower air and noise pollution.

According to him, embracing bicycles as a mode of transportation is currently crucial as many citizens are battling with the challenges brought about by increased fuel price and the high cost of transportation arising from fuel subsidy removal.

He said, “Cycling is apt, now that Nigerians are going through a fuel crisis as it would help save money and keep people healthy.

“A lot of people aren’t exercising. Cycling in the morning and evening is good to curtail the risk of non-communicable diseases.

“Instead of driving cars to markets or to visit friends in our neighbourhood, we can use our bicycles. Cycling can help improve cardiovascular, lung, and mental health.

“It is an enjoyable way to stay healthy as it helps you to lose weight, lower your cholesterol and strengthen your legs.”

The physician said aside from the health benefits, cycling can also help to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, improve public health and foster a cleaner environment.

He advised cyclists to prioritise their safety by adorning protective gear and to obeying traffic rules.

He also warned against cycling on highways to avoid accidents.

Dr. Akintade appealed to the government to promote cycling through the creation of dedicated cycling and walking lanes, street lights and improved security to enhance safety.

Leicester end nine-year Premier League stay with final day relegation heartbreak

In a heartbreaking conclusion to their nine-year tenure in the Premier League, Leicester City was relegated despite their victory over West Ham on the final day of the season.

The Foxes’ fate was beyond their control as they entered the last round of fixtures, and Everton’s 1-0 triumph over Bournemouth sealed Leicester’s relegation to the Championship by a slim two-point margin.

While Everton supporters reveled in ecstasy at Goodison Park, Leicester fans at the King Power Stadium were left to lament a dismal campaign that saw their team secure only nine league wins.

Knowing they needed a win to have any chance of staying up, Leicester came close to an early breakthrough when Kelechi Iheanacho and James Maddison combined, with Iheanacho’s fierce, curling effort striking the crossbar.

Nonetheless, the hosts managed to break the deadlock just before halftime when Harvey Barnes calmly finished off a pass from Iheanacho, momentarily keeping their survival hopes alive on goal difference.

The second half was fraught with nerve-wracking tension, as Jonny Evans came perilously close to scoring an own goal. However, the atmosphere in the stadium turned somber when news arrived of Everton’s goal, dampening Leicester’s chances of a miraculous escape.

Despite the setback, Leicester continued to fight, and Wout Faes headed in their second goal after a delightful curling effort from Said Benrahma struck the post for the visitors.

As the match concluded, Pablo Fornals managed to pull a goal back for West Ham, sealing a 14th-place finish for the Hammers, comfortably six points clear of the relegation zone.
