Flash flooding in Somalia has killed 50 people and driven nearly 700,000 from their homes, a government official said, with heavy rains starting Tuesday expected to worsen the country’s plight.

The Horn of Africa region is experiencing torrential rainfall and floods linked to the El Nino weather phenomenon, claiming dozens of lives and causing large-scale displacement, including in Somalia, where the downpours have destroyed bridges and inundated residential areas.

“Fifty people died in the disaster… while 687,235 people were forced to flee their houses,” Somali Disaster Management Agency director Mohamud Moalim Abdullahi said at a press briefing on Monday.

“The expected rains between 21st and 24th of November… may cause more flooding which could cause death and destruction,” he added.
On Saturday, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said the number of people displaced by heavy rains and floods in Somalia “has nearly doubled in one week”, while 1.7 million people overall have been affected by the disaster.

“In addition, roads, bridges and airstrips have been damaged in several areas, affecting the movement of people and supplies and leading to increased prices of basic commodities,” OCHA said.

British charity Save the Children on Thursday said more than 100 people, including 16 children, had died and more than 700,000 forced from their homes in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia due to flash flooding.

The Horn of Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events are occurring with increased frequency and intensity.

The region is emerging from the worst drought in four decades after multiple failed rainy seasons that left millions of people in need and devastated crops and livestock.

Humanitarian groups have warned that the situation is only likely to worsen and called for urgent global intervention as El Nino is expected to last until at least April 2024.

  • Outrage as lady allegedly bleeds to death after friend slashed her hand

Outrage as lady allegedly bleeds to death after friend slashed her hand

    By Deborah Sanusi

Videos revealing the moment a lady slashed the hand of her friend during a fight have surfaced online, drawing outrage from netizens.

The now-trending videos were posted on X by Obaofph01 on Tuesday with the caption, “Girl mistakenly kills her friend in a fight. Dear women, please mind the kind of friends you keep; the hearts of some girls are darker than the devil’s heart. The smaller the circle, the better.”

The first video revealed how a lady slashed the victim’s forearm during an argument, while the second video showed the victim lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

Netizens on Twitter have since begun to react to the incident, as some advised first-aid measures to be taken in such a situation. In contrast, others condemned the act, stating that the assaulter and witnesses should be arrested.

Rob MD commented, “Just a medical advice: if ever in such a situation, don’t panic; get a cloth and tie it firmly around the bleeding point; help the victim to lie down and rush to the nearest hospital.

That was an arterial bleed that led to her exsanguination. We need to place more emphasis on first-aid measures to save such situations. Even the person who was doing the video would have done a better job giving first aid help.”

Ohifeme00 commented on the post, saying, “If any of them were educated enough, they would have known how to slow down the bleeding and get her to a hospital.”

Mr. Sly tweeted, “Saddened by her preventable death, I am deeply heartbroken. The application of a simple homemade tourniquet using a belt or fabric could have significantly reduced her blood loss and helped her receive medical support.”

Irunnia commented, “Over ten grown adult women, but not one with a functioning brain, not even the dead girl. So none of them thought about covering the wound and rushing her to the nearest hospital? All they did was record. Record for who?”

BongoIdeas tweeted that the girls should be arrested for their negligence, saying, “The company you keep could determine whether you live long or not. All the girls gotta be arrested firstly for their ignorance and secondly for their negligence.”

Abazz also supported the arrest, tweeting, “Please arrest all of them in that house. She was bleeding for a long time, and no one cared to rush her to the hospital?”
Rasheed Zubair also replied, “They probably thought it wouldn’t be that serious, but I agree they should all serve jail terms.”

Dr Fasawe made this known during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the Primary Health Care Centre, Wassa in Abuja Municipal Area Council to assess the facility, the quality of care rendered as well as the scope of operations in tandem with standard healthcare guidelines.

According to her, every resident of the FCT is entitled to health care services regardless of their socio-economic status.

She noted that the government is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the people through innovative healthcare interventions and community outreach programmes.

Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has directed the secretariat to embark on advocacy and sensitisation programmes to enlighten the people on how and where to access healthcare services at affordable rates within the FCT.

A latest report by the World Health Organisation showed that Nigeria accounts for the second-highest number of maternal and child deaths globally.

  • abourer allegedly stabs businessman to death in Onitsha market

abourer allegedly stabs businessman to death in Onitsha market

There was pandemonium in Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State on Tuesday evening as a labourer allegedly stabbed a yet-to-be-identified businessman to death.

Our correspondent gathered at that the labourer was contracted by the businessman to help him offload his goods at his warehouse, located at the section of the market where they sell baking materials.

It was not yet clear what led to the incident but according to sources in the market, trouble started when an argument over payment ensued between the labourer and the businessman.

It was not yet clear if the businessman was robbed, but unconfirmed reports suggested that the labourer made away with the deceased’s money.

The source, who craved anonymity said, “Trouble started when the businessman was suddenly seen in a pool of his own blood by his colleagues and the Hausa man was nowhere to be found.

“No one knows what really happened, but it was suspected that the labourer contracted by the deceased might have stabbed him and made away with his money.

“The development irked young persons in the area and they quickly mobilised themselves in search of the perpetrator. This forced other northerners to seek refuge at the Army Barracks and the Central Police Station in Onitsha over the fear of reprisal attack by the angry mob.”

When contacted, the state police public relations officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

Ikenga said, “It was a case of murder which happened at Bright Street, inside Main Market, Onitsha, around 4 pm, but we can’t confirm the identity of the culprit, the identity is immaterial.

“Murder is murder, whoever commits it will answer for it. I don’t have any information about the identity of the suspect but will ensure that whoever is responsible is arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Security operatives who were quickly mobilised to the scene as soon as they got the report, discovered the man in the pool of his own blood. He was rushed to the hospital where the doctors on duty confirmed him dead.

“Preliminary investigation showed that it was a murder case and some persons have been fingered and we are currently on their track to unmask and arrest them.

“Information available to the police suggested that it was not a robbery incident because all the goods in the warehouse were still intact, it’s a pure murder case and the circumstances surrounding the act must be unraveled.”
