  • Man United eye new goalkeeper despite David de Gea contract talks

Man United eye new goalkeeper despite David de Gea contract talks

Manchester United have confirmed ongoing contract negotiations with David de Gea following the announcement of seven player releases.

The experienced goalkeeper recently completed his 12th season at Old Trafford, securing the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets.

While De Gea’s performances have had some shortcomings, particularly in his ball distribution and occasional blunders while attempting to save shots, United and manager Erik ten Hag are interested in extending his contract. However, a significant reduction in his weekly wages of £350,000 has been agreed in principle.

Although United has not yet confirmed De Gea’s retention while announcing player departures and contract extensions for Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop, talks are underway for a new deal.

The departing players include Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Galbraith, Di’Shon Bernard, Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens, and Manni Norkett.

United’s pursuit of De Gea’s contract extension does not hinder their plans to acquire a new goalkeeper. Porto’s Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya are being closely monitored, and the club is also keeping an eye on the situation of Inter’s Andre Onana, who has been a long-term target for Chelsea and could be valued at approximately £40m.

Another priority for Ten Hag is signing a new striker who can serve as the club’s primary number nine. Anthony Martial’s injury record has made him unreliable, and Wout Weghorst’s loan spell was always intended as a short-term solution.

Notable names on United’s shortlist include Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, and Dusan Vlahovic, along with ongoing interest in Benjamin Sesko and Rasmus Hojlund, among others.

  • Manchester United must use FA Cup final defeat as motivation – Ten Hag

Manchester United must use FA Cup final defeat as motivation – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must use the pain of their narrow FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City to improve and eventually catch their dominant neighbours.

The eyes of the footballing world were on Wembley as these rivals went toe-to-toe in a major cup final for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring with a stunning volley after 12 seconds, with Bruno Fernandes’ penalty cancelling out the quickest goal in FA Cup final history.

But City regained the lead through another Gundogan volley to seal a 2-1 win, giving them a chance to emulate United’s 1999 treble heroes in next weekend’s Champions League final.

Many United fans had started the long, train strike-impacted journey home when their rivals lifted the trophy, but Ten Hag and his team watched those celebrations.

“First of all, show respect always,” the Dutchman said. “But, yeah, of course, it’s a motivation.

“You have to feel it in your stomach. This hurts and it has to be fuel.

“We want to be there and our team, my players, deserved it, but you have to grab it and that is the next step we have to make.”

It was a galling end to a promising first season under Ten Hag, who is proud to have overseen a third-placed finish, Carabao Cup win and narrow FA Cup final loss.

“I want to congratulate City for winning the FA Cup, but I think it was very narrow, it was head to head,” he said. “We played very competitive out of a very good organisation.

“We didn’t allow them out from open play against probably the best team in the world in this moment.

“We fought back after going a quick goal down and I think we are the only team in the world who is capable of fighting back against this team from City.

“So, yeah, I was happy with the performance of my team.

  • Phil Jones to leave Manchester United after 12 years

Phil Jones to leave Manchester United after 12 years

Manchester United defender, Phil Jones, will bid farewell to the club as his contract expires this summer, concluding a challenging period marked by injuries.

The 31-year-old English international, who has earned 27 caps for his country, leaves behind a legacy of 229 appearances and six goals for the Red Devils.

Having joined the club in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers, Jones notably contributed to Manchester United’s Premier League title victory in the 2012-2013 season.

“I’ve worked tirelessly hard – I literally left no stone unturned,” Jones said in a club interview.

“I tried to get back as quick as I could, every time I was out in the last couple of years.”

His final appearance for United came in a 3-0 win over Brentford at the end of last season, and he has been sidelined with injury during this campaign.

“I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could,” Jones wrote in an open letter to Manchester United fans.

“It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years, there’s no denying that,” he added in his club interview.

Jones admitted he felt like he was “letting people down” and that he “found it hard to even speak to my team-mates” because he was “hurt that I couldn’t help them”.

“My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more.

“I think the highlight for me would have to be the Wolves game [returning from injury last season], when I came back.

“That was just a moment that I’ll never forget. It gives me goosebumps now, thinking about it. I mean I worked so, so hard to get to that stage of fitness.

“That was a huge, huge moment in my career and the fans, that day, were incredible. The love that they showed me for that game, the passion that they showed, was sensational.

“I can’t thank them enough for that. They’ve been a constant support throughout my time here.”

During his 12 years at the club, Jones won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign with United.

He also won the FA Cup in 2016, the League Cup and Europa League in 2017, and the Community Shield in 2011 and 2013.

Speaking in 2021, Jones said had “been through hell and back over the last couple of years” after struggling with injury and lockdown.

He described breaking down in tears and feelings of “rage” and helplessness over being labeled a figure of ridicule by some of his own supporters and described once being verbally abused in the street in Hale while out with his two daughters.

Sheikh Jassim submits improved ‘take it or leave it’ bid for Manchester United

Sheikh Jassim has submitted an improved bid in his ongoing attempt to purchase Manchester United from the Glazer family.

Sheikh Jassim, chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank and son of a former Qatari prime minister, and his competitor Sir Jim Ratcliffe had previously submitted what were expected to be their final bids for the club last month. However, Sheikh Jassim has now increased the value of his offer.

The bid remains for the complete ownership of the club, with a commitment to clearing all existing debt and the inclusion of a separate fund specifically designated for the club and its community.

Inside Old Trafford, officials, and staff are eager for clarity regarding the takeover situation. The process began in November when Manchester United announced that the board was exploring various options, including a full sale, to enhance the club’s growth.

Sheikh Jassim was the first potential buyer to publicly confirm his bid during the initial round in February, followed by Ratcliffe, the Manchester-born owner of INEOS.

The first quarter of the year was initially considered a crucial time in this ongoing process, which has created uncertainty and threatened to overshadow Manchester United’s pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot.

After a soft deadline in February and a subsequent deadline in March for those who progressed, Raine Group, the firm overseeing the sale, requested the third and final bids from interested parties on April 28.

The Glazer family, who acquired the club through a leveraged takeover in 2005, have faced significant criticism from United fans, who have expressed their desire for a complete buy-out.

‘First name on my list’, Berbatov urges Manchester United to sign Victor Osimhen

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen has caught the attention of former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who believes he is the ideal candidate to become the club’s next primary striker.

United are attempting to seal a place in the Premier League’s top four ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion, and need to win their final three games to ensure they finish ahead of both and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Erik ten Hag’s United have struggled to find the net consistently throughout the season. They have grappled with the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo since his departure in November, as well as Anthony Martial’s fitness and injury woes, which have limited his playing time. Although Wout Weghorst was brought in on loan in January, his contributions have been modest, with just two goals to his name since joining the team.

It is worth noting that Weghorst’s goals have not been in the league, exacerbating United’s scoring challenges. In fact, the team has managed to net a mere 51 goals in 35 games, a considerably lower tally compared to their counterparts.

Berbatov, speaking in an interview, emphasized the significance of United making the right choice for their next acquisition in the central striker position. He firmly places Nigerian talent Osimhen at the top of his list, favoring him over Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

“Someone who can bring goals [is what United need]. Obviously, the job of the striker nowadays has changed a little bit, but the main thing remains – strikers need to score goals,” Berbatov said.

“[Wout] Weghorst, he’s doing fantastic in the defensive type of work, running his socks off, chasing people, making tackles inside the box, defending from the front. But he doesn’t score goals and people are judging him on that.

“When United buy a striker, he needs to be someone that you say ‘this is the guy who is going to give you 20-plus goals’.

“I think that striker can be Victor Osimhen from Napoli. I think he’s fantastic – from the way he’s scoring, to how he’s scoring and the speed he has. If United are going for striking options, the first name on my list will be Osimhen.”

According to reports, Osimhen and Kane feature on a shortlist of United’s primary options for the summer, though the club are still weighing up whether to sign a cheaper, alternative option with potential to develop into the finished product under Ten Hag’s coaching.

Decisions have not yet been made as United wait to confirm their position in the top four, while the club’s ownership issues are yet to be resolved.

However, Berbatov, who himself moved from Tottenham to Old Trafford in 2008 after United spent weeks negotiating with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, has doubts about how easy a deal signing Kane will be for United, while he has also questioned whether Kane will want to leave his boyhood club anyway.

“In the summer, we’re probably going to be witnessing again that type of saga – Kane going somewhere? A TV soap opera,” he added.

Despite De Gea’s recent success, his future at Manchester United remains uncertain as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and negotiations for a new deal have yet to be finalized.

De Gea’s recent errors, particularly in defeats against Sevilla and West Ham, have raised questions among Manchester United fans regarding whether the club should offer him a new contract. These mistakes have been cause for concern.

Nevertheless, Manchester United manager Ten Hag has expressed unwavering support for De Gea, highlighting his importance to the team. Ten Hag stated, “He currently holds the record for the most clean sheets in the league, and our position wouldn’t be the same without him. I have complete faith in him, and I have no concerns. Mistakes happen, but as a team, we need to deal with them, show character, resilience, and bounce back. We want him to stay and extend his contract.”

Despite the doubts surrounding De Gea’s future, it appears that the Manchester United manager fully backs the goalkeeper and values his contributions to the team. The negotiations for a new contract will likely play a crucial role in determining De Gea’s future at the club.

  • Manchester United eye Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer

Manchester United eye Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer

According to German journalist, Christian Falk, Manchester United are interested in signing Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Sommer joined Bayern last winter as a quick replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer. Since his move from Borussia Mönchengladbach, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has been a consistent presence in the starting lineup for the reigning champions.

However, there is an understanding between Sommer and the club that if Neuer returns in the summer, he will reclaim the number one spot, allowing the Swiss international to depart during the same transfer window.

Considering the upcoming European Championships, it would be logical for Sommer to seek regular playing time elsewhere immediately. Remaining on the bench at Bayern is not a viable option, especially when his Swiss compatriots Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) and Jonas Omlin (Gladbach) will continue to feature prominently at their respective clubs.

Manchester United’s interest in Sommer has existed since his time at Gladbach.

The Red Devils have been closely monitoring him as a potential replacement for or competitor to David de Gea.
