The Oyo State Ministry of Environment has urged civil society organisations, religious bodies, residents and other stakeholders to cooperate with government to make the state Open Defecation Free.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, made the call during a pre-sensitisation stakeholders meeting in commemoration of the 2023 World Toilet Day on Tuesday in Ibadan.

The World Toilet Day is an annual United Nations observance promoted through a worldwide public campaign that encourages action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.

Mogbonjubola was represented at the event by the Director of Water Resources Management, Mr Bankole Okubanjo.

He said the stakeholders meeting was aimed to discuss the plan of activities, initiatives and strategies for the commemoration of the day in order to achieve the desire result of making the state ODF.

He said that the state’s World Toilet Day commemoration slated for Nov. 19 would focus on the theme: “Accelerating Change,” to meet the sanitation target of the state.

Also speaking, the Director, Sanitation, Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, Mrs Titilayo Obayemi, said the state government had launched open defecation free roadmap in July 2022 to ensure the state become ODF by 2028.

Obayemi said statistics had shown that Oyo State came first in open defecation ranking among the states in the Southwest.

She disclosed that the test conducted by RUWASSA in some communities in the state revealed that the water that people drink had been polluted with faeces.

Obayemi noted that the situation poses a threat to nature and public health.

She added that the state government in partnership with the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) had picked Ona-Ara and Egbeda Local Governments in Oct. 2022 for the pilot phase to achieve ODF state.

Obayemi urged religious bodies, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to use their platforms to raise campaign against open defecation in the state.

Earlier, the UNICEF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Specialist, Lagos Field Office, Mr Monday Johnson, said most diseases that affect people could be linked to poor or absence of good toilet.

Johnson urged the stakeholders to join the campaign of getting people to construct and use toilet to promote good health, dignity and to save resources that would be wasted on medications during the outbreak of diseases.

The state government had concluded arrangements to commemorate this year’s World Toilet Day on Nov. 20 with lectures and a road walk to markets in the state.

Open heart surgery can be performed without any incision – Cardiologist

    Sodiq Ojuroungbe

A Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Oluwaseye Oladimeji has revealed that there are other medical interventions to treat holes in the heart.

He said patients with congenital defect can either undergo open heart surgery or embark on non-surgical closure.

The medical expert, who was among the doctors that performed Ventricular Septal Defect Closure (VSD) on a patient at LASUTH on Tuesday, said a patient with an open heart can now have it closed without having surgery incision in the chest wall.

Dr. Oladimeji, alongside other specialists, had carried out a first-of-its-kind procedure known as VSD at the LASUTH’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

The Interventional Cardiologist described the procedure as one that is performed on patients born with a hole in the heart, adding that VSD is a type of heart procedure that closes a hole between the left and right ventricles of the heart.

He said, “There are two ways to deal with holes in the heart. One is to perform an open heart surgery, while the other way, is to do a non-surgical closure.

“VSD can be done without making an incision in the chest wall and the defect can be closed using a disc-like device

“Patients who undergo this procedure can be discharged two hours after VSD closure and they can be on their way home.”

According to Cleveland Clinic, A ventricular septal defect is a condition where one is born with a hole in the wall between the two lower chambers of the heart.

Often shortened to VSD, this condition is the most common congenital (meaning one is born with it ) heart defect and often happens alongside other types of heart problems or defects.

It explained that a small VSD is usually minor and has few or no symptoms. However, a larger hole may need to be repaired to avoid permanent damage and complications.

On how common the condition is, Cleveland Clinic stated that VSD happens in about one-third of 1 per cent of all newborns, adding, “However, a VSD diagnosis in adults is much less likely because the defect closes on its own during childhood in 90% of cases.

“VSDs that are a side effect of a heart attack are extremely rare, especially because of modern heart attack treatment methods. Today, it happens in less than 1% of all heart attacks.”

Highlighting symptoms of VCD or hole in the heart, the health site stated, “In infants, moderate to large VSD causes symptoms that look like heart failure. These include – shortness of breath, including fast breathing or struggling to breathe; sweating or fatigue during feeding; failure to thrive (slow weight gain); frequent respiratory infections.

“VSD in older children and adults can cause the following – feeling tired or out of breath easily when exercising and slightly higher risk of heart inflammation caused by infections.”

The Lagos State Government has flagged off its ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet’ campaign as part of efforts to meet the 2025 target for the eradication of open defecation nationwide.

According to the press release, the state government’s mandate to eradicate open defecation is embedded in Pillar One, Goal Two of the Lagos Resilience Strategy Document which focuses on “Improving access to clean water and sanitation” through four initiatives.

  •  Kano govt launches free open heart surgery, welcomes 20 cardiac surgeons

Kano govt launches free open heart surgery, welcomes 20 cardiac surgeons

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has launched free open heart surgery for patients with cardiac malfunction in Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the exercise is being sponsored by the Saudi Arabia Government in partnership with Muslim World League and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Flagging off the operation in Kano, Yusuf, reiterated the commitment of his administration to collaborate with any non-governmental organisations, good-spirited individuals and philanthropists willing to assist in providing specialised training to the health personnel and medical care to the patients in need of such services.

The governor expressed happiness that the initiative would augment the efforts of the state government in giving the health sector the desired attention.

“We are very much delighted to have you in Kano for this gigantic assistance. Kano state is the most populous state in Nigeria with over 21 million people.

“We have the most vulnerable people and downtrodden masses that don’t have any means of taking care of their health needs.

“We will stick to our campaign promises of building general hospitals across the 44 local governments and primary healthcare centres across the state and re-introduce mobile clinics to cater for the people in rural areas who are in need of medical attention free of charge,” he said.

The Head of the medical team from Saudi Arabia, Dr. Utman Al-uthman Saad, said the group comprised 20 cardiac surgeons who will perform the surgery and pledged that they would do their best to achieve the set goals.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Abdulrahman Sheshe, described the intervention as timely, noting that there is an increase of heart disease related cases, especially in Northern Nigeria due to the prevalence of hypertension cases.

He expressed optimism that the state government would formulate policies to re-invigorate the health sector and reduce medical tourism in the search for specialised treatment.

Players arrive Kaduna for U18 Volleyball open camp

At least more than 200 volleyball players under the age of 18 are expected to report at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna for the national open camp slated to hold between Wednesday 31st May, and Sunday 4th June, 2023.

According to the organisers, the camp will be used as an avenue to select players who will represent the country at the 2023 African U17 Boys and Girls Nations Championship scheduled to hold in Nigeria from 6th to 16th July 2023.

The Technical Representative on the board of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Chief Martin Melandi, said the camp will afford the Federation to create a level-playing ground for players from different parts of the country. He nonetheless cautioned academy and state coaches to avoid releasing overaged players for the open camp.

“The Federation has a policy that encourages equity and fairness in the selection of players for the national teams. We are trying to select the best hands that can make the country proud ahead of the African U17 Boys and Girls Nations Championship to be hosted by Nigeria in July.

“I am making an appeal to all the coaches in the various academies and states not to send players over the age of 18 years old. I am aware the National Youth Games is a platform where children under the age of 15 participate and I have seen younger players feature in the Division 1 and 2 Leagues respectively.

“Players who will be participating in the Division 1 and 2 Leagues are exempted from the open camp as coaches will be sent to select more players leagues in Imo State. The Federation wants to set a standard where we can be sure of parading younger players who stand the test of time in the next decade.”

Melandi, a former international national referee, however, commended board members of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVF) for coming up with the idea of the open camp.

  • See why Andy Murray has decided to sit out 2023 French Open

See why Andy Murray has decided to sit out 2023 French Open

British tennis player, Andy Murray, has made the decision to withdraw from the French Open in order to prioritize the grass-court season leading up to Wimbledon.

Since 2017, Murray has only participated in Roland Garros once. Although he won the clay-court Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence in May, he has struggled to find consistency on the surface.

The French Open, which is the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, is scheduled to take place from May 28th to June 11th.

Murray recently suffered a loss to his long-time rival Stan Wawrinka in Bordeaux, adding to his early exits at ATP Tour events in Rome, Madrid, and Monte Carlo.

However, Murray did secure his first clay-court title since 2016 by defeating Tommy Paul, ranked 17th in the world, in Aix-en-Provence after coming back from a set down. This victory marked his first singles trophy in four years.

In May, Murray expressed uncertainty about participating in Roland Garros, stating that he needs to prioritize what is best for him at this stage of his career. He acknowledged that his best chance for a deep run in a tournament is more likely to occur at Wimbledon.

Murray is scheduled to compete in the Cinch Championships at Queen’s Club, taking place from June 19th to 25th. The Surbiton Trophy, the first event of the British grass-court season, will be held from June 4th to 11th.

While Murray reached the French Open final in 2016, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic, and the semifinals in 2017, ending his run was Stan Wawrinka.

After undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, Murray’s ranking dropped to 503 in the men’s rankings. However, he has worked his way back up to 42nd in the world.

In the Australian Open earlier this year, Murray had remarkable performances, spending over 10 hours on court in victories over Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis before being eliminated in the third round by Roberto Bautista Agut.

Murray joins Rafael Nadal, a 14-time champion, in withdrawing from the French Open. Additionally, Matteo Berrettini and Nick Kyrgios have also decided not to participate.

Jodie Burrage, the British women’s number two, will also miss the French Open due to a lingering injury, despite her initial plans to participate in the qualifying rounds. Burrage hopes to recover in time for the grass-court event in Surbiton, starting on June 4th, and she will surpass Emma Raducanu in the rankings following the French Open, regardless of her results.
