Tragedy as fan falls to death at Argentine football match

A top-flight match in Argentina between Primera Division leaders River Plate and Defensa y Justicia was abruptly halted after a fan tragically fell to their death from a grandstand at River Plate’s Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.

Referee Fernando Rapallini immediately suspended the match as authorities, including police and firefighters, secured the area.

River Plate officials expressed their condolences, confirming that the supporter had passed away at the scene. An investigation into the incident was initiated, and the club stated that the affected area would remain closed for 24 hours to gather evidence.

The club’s statement highlighted the prompt response of medical services, police, and security agencies, adding that no third-party involvement or acts of violence were present in or around the stands.

The fan was later identified as Pablo Marcelo Serrano, and River Plate described the day as one filled with deep sadness. The league also expressed its shared pain and sympathized with the family and friends affected by the tragedy.
