Some yet-to-be-identified assailants have allegedly killed no fewer than four persons identified to be officials of the United Nations International Children’s Fund.
The incident reportedly took place late on Tuesday at Amiyi and Eke Ochuche communities in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Although details of the incident are still sketchy, however, members of the community said the victims were UNICEF medical team, while other sources said they suspect the deceased officials to be staff of the US embassy.
No reason has yet been attributed to the killings, but a source in the area said the assailants ambushed the victims and shot them.
The source added that the assailants had earlier caused panic in the area as they invaded the arena where some residents had gathered and were waiting to receive medical treatment from the UNICEF officials.
“They were ambushed, and about four of them were gunned down, while others sustained various degrees of injuries. They escaped with a vehicle that has UNICEF the inscription.
“Among the victims were white and black officials, who were on a medical outreach to the rural riverine areas,” the source informed further.
When contacted, the state Police Spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Echeng Echeng, has deployed a police team to arrest the situation.
He said, “Following the information of the shooting incident within the Ogbaru community, the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng deployed a police team led by the deputy commissioner of police in-charge of operations to arrest the situation.
“Meanwhile, the details of the incident are still sketchy, we will get back to you as soon as we can, please,” He said.
