Vinicius Junior takes swipe at LaLiga over racist abuse from Valladolid fans

Vinicius Junior has taken a swipe at La Liga after being racially abused by opposition fans in Real Madrid’s win over Real Valladolid on Friday, December 30, 2022.

The 22-year-old Brazilian star was earlier racially abused by Atletico Madrid fans in September 2022, with the club issuing an apology and La Liga reporting the matter to the authorities.

A similar incident repeated itself in Real Madrid’s first match back after the 2022 World Cup at Valladolid. During the game, offensive chants were heard coming from the home supporters.

Those chants were directed at Vinicius Junior, and the abuse increased after he kicked an object thrown at him back into the stands.

Following the unpalatable experience, Vinicius took to his verified Twitter handle (@vinijr) to express his disappointment and frustration that LaLiga isn’t doing enough to fight the scourge of racism.

“Racists continue to go to stadiums and watch the biggest club in the world up close and La Liga continues to do nothing…,” he said. I will continue with my head held high and celebrating my victories and those of Madrid. In the end, it’s MY fault.”

In a response to Vinicius Junior’s complaint, LaLiga released a statement outlining the action that is being taken.

“We are investigating last night’s match and will work with the clubs and appropriate authorities to identify and prosecute anyone guilty of hate speech,” said a spokesperson.

“As for yesterday’s events, LaLiga is still investigating but has already identified racist insults from some individuals (not groups) in videos uploaded to social media, which will be the subject of an official complaint as in previous cases.
