U-20 AFCON: Senegal edge Benin Republic 1-0 to qualify for semi-finals

The Junior Lions of Teranga from Senegal on Thursday in Cairo, defeated Benin Republic 1-0, securing their spot in the semi-finals of the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The victory also ensured their participation in the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, to be held in Indonesia.

Senegal’s team captain, Samba Diallo, scored the only goal of the match with a header from Lamine Camara’s free-kick, sealing their place in both the semi-finals and the World Cup.

Despite Benin Republic defending well, the Senegalese dominated the game, creating the best chances and restricting their opponents to counter-attacks.

Although Diallo missed an earlier chance to score, he made up for it six minutes into the second half, breaking the deadlock with his diving header.

Senegal continued to dominate the game, but failed to convert their chances, with Diallo missing another opportunity to score.

As the game came to a close, substitute Stephane Vignigbe had a chance to equalize for Benin Republic, but his header went wide, allowing Senegal to secure their victory and place in the next round of the tournament.
