  • LALIGA: ‘Messi wants to return to Barcelona’, father confirms

LALIGA: ‘Messi wants to return to Barcelona’, father confirms

In a significant development, Jorge, father of Lionel Messi has confirmed that the World Cup winner is actively seeking a return to Barcelona this summer.

Having already announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, Messi aims to conclude his two-year tenure in France and secure a reunion with his former club for the upcoming season.

The Barcelona board has been eagerly pursuing Messi’s re-signing, but their plans have been contingent on obtaining approval for their financial plan from La Liga.

Barcelona had temporarily faced restrictions on registering new players due to exceeding the salary cap. However, reports suggest that La Liga is on the verge of granting approval to Barcelona’s financial plan, paving the way for immediate contract negotiations with Messi.

Recently, Messi’s father, Jorge, met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta in a meeting that was documented by journalist Toni Juanmarti, affirming the ongoing discussions between the parties involved.

“Messi wants to return to Barça and I would love for him to come back,” Jorge said. “It is an option.”

Jorge later told Jijantes FC: “We trust that Messi can return.”

Barcelona are confident as they work towards reaching an agreement to bring Lionel Messi back to the club, following his departure in 2021 due to financial challenges. The Catalan club intends to leverage their newfound freedom to secure contract extensions for several first-team stars as well.

Despite midfielder Gavi and centre-back Ronald Araujo already agreeing to long-term extensions months ago, Barcelona faced obstacles in registering these deals with La Liga. The league had imposed a ban on the club’s salary additions as they had exceeded their cap. However, Barcelona has been actively demonstrating to La Liga their financial stability and ability to fulfill their plans. The recent departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have significantly contributed to this cause.

Registering the extensions for Gavi and Araujo is among Barcelona’s top priorities. Once negotiations with Messi conclude, the club will shift its focus to pursuing additional transfer targets. Inigo Martinez, who confirmed his departure from Athletic Club this summer, could potentially join Barcelona.

Furthermore, the LaLiga champions has expressed interest in acquiring Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan as well.

Messi’s return to Barcelona possible – Father

Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge, has said his son would love to return to Barcelona this summer.

Jorge disclosed this to newsmen after he reportedly met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta on Monday morning.

While denying having a meeting with Laporta, he said he also wished the Argentine captain returned to the Spanish club.

He said, “Of course, he [Messi] would love to return to Barcelona. I would like it too. We will see.”

Asked if he had discussed with Laporta the possibility of Barcelona financing his son’s return to the club, Jorge said, “We spoke the other day, but there’s nothing concrete.”

Barca is said to be awaiting approval from LaLiga this week regarding their financial plans ahead of the transfer window while also beaming with the prospects of re-signing Messi.

This is as Barca coach Xavi Hernandez said that Messi would make a decision regarding his future club this week and that “the doors are open” for his return.

35-year-old Messi is considering offers as he leaves Paris Saint-Germain, as a free agent after two seasons with the French champions.

  • Barcelona’s title celebrations marred by defeat to Real Sociedad

Barcelona’s title celebrations marred by defeat to Real Sociedad

Barcelona’s much-anticipated LaLiga title celebrations fell flat at Camp Nou as they suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Xavi’s side had clinched the top-flight crown with a resounding 4-2 victory over Espanyol in their previous outing, sparking jubilant scenes on the pitch.

However, their return home was met with disappointment as Mikel Merino’s early strike and Alexander Sorloth’s breakaway finish secured the three points for La Real.

Despite a late header from Robert Lewandowski reigniting hope for Barca, Real Sociedad held on for a historic away win at Camp Nou, their first since May 1991. The result puts Imanol Alguacil’s side in pole position for securing Champions League football, with just three games remaining in the season.

Real Sociedad caught their hosts off guard with a swift counter-attack, as Merino calmly slotted home an early finish to give them the lead. Barcelona had an opportunity to equalize when Ousmane Dembele connected with Lewandowski’s delivery, but an outstanding save from Alex Remiro denied them. Lewandowski himself missed a close-range chance, dragging his shot wide.

Barcelona’s luck continued at the other end of the pitch, with Ander Barrenetxea squandering two golden opportunities and Marc-Andre ter Stegen denying Mohamed Ali-Cho. However, Sorloth made no mistake when presented with a superb counter-attacking opportunity, heading home to extend Real Sociedad’s lead.

Lewandowski’s impressive header in the late stages of the game set up a thrilling finale. However, Real Sociedad held firm during five minutes of added time, securing a deserving victory and moving five points clear of fifth-placed Villarreal in the league standings.

The defeat tarnished Barcelona’s celebration of their first league title since 2019, leaving a bitter taste after their recent triumph. As the season nears its end, Real Sociedad’s well-earned win puts them in a favorable position for a coveted Champions League spot, while Barcelona will aim to regroup and finish the campaign on a high note.

  • Barcelona set to appoint Deco as Sporting Director this summer

Barcelona set to appoint Deco as Sporting Director this summer

Barcelona has reached an agreement with former Portuguese midfielder Deco to assume the role of sporting director at Camp Nou.

Barça is expected to undergo significant changes this summer, as current director Jordi Cruyff has been confirmed to leave at the end of the season, along with Mateu Alemany, who will join Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

With a vacancy in Barcelona’s hierarchy, Deco, who maintains a good relationship with President Joan Laporta, is being considered for the position. Deco previously played for the club for four seasons, making over 150 appearances and winning La Liga twice as well as the Champions League before his transfer to Chelsea in 2008.

Sources indicate that Barça was impressed by Deco’s involvement in Raphinha’s transfer from Leeds United last summer. The Brazilian winger arrived for a fee of around £55 million and, despite being linked with a potential exit in the upcoming transfer window, has expressed his desire to stay at the club.

Deco’s appointment would also be significant for two key figures at Barcelona: manager Xavi and Lionel Messi. Xavi has been informed of Deco’s imminent return and is pleased to see his former teammate back at the club.

Furthermore, Deco shares a close relationship with current Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi, who is strongly leaning towards a return to Catalonia. Barcelona is highly confident in their ability to announce Messi’s signing soon, despite interest from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, who have attempted to enter the bidding.

The Argentine World Cup winner is inclined to reunite with his former club, and Deco’s arrival serves as another indication of Barcelona’s preparations for Messi’s homecoming.

Club president Laporta recently stated that Barcelona and Messi have “recovered” their relationship and added that they will do everything possible to bring the superstar back to the club.

Barcelona secures La Liga title with dominant 4-2 win over Espanyol

Barcelona clinched their first La Liga title since 2019 with a convincing 4-2 victory over inner-city rivals Espanyol on Sunday.

The Catalans took an early lead through Robert Lewandowski and continued their dominance by adding two more goals before halftime, with Alejandro Balde and Lewandowski finding the net. Jules Kounde extended the lead at the start of the second half, while Javier Puado and Joselu scored consolation goals for Espanyol.

This triumph marks Barcelona’s 28th win of a remarkably dominant campaign under the guidance of Xavi Hernandez. Despite facing tough competition from European champions Real Madrid and a resurgent Atletico Madrid side, Barcelona has made the La Liga title race appear effortless, securing the championship with four games to spare.

A significant factor behind their success has been Barcelona’s unexpectedly impressive defensive record. Throughout the season, they have conceded a mere 13 goals in 34 league matches.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been instrumental in this achievement and has the opportunity to set a new clean sheet record in the remaining games, as he is just one clean sheet away from the current record.

On the offensive front, summer signing Robert Lewandowski has once again showcased his prowess by reaching the 30-goal mark for the eighth consecutive season. His consistent goal-scoring contributions have been vital to Barcelona’s title-winning campaign.

  • On-loan Cancelo emerges as target for Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid

On-loan Cancelo emerges as target for Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid

Joao Cancelo’s future at Manchester City appears uncertain as reports indicate that he is unlikely to be reintegrated into the first team for the upcoming season.

Several top clubs in Europe have expressed interest in signing the Portugal international, according to reports.

In a surprising move, Cancelo was loaned out to Bayern Munich for the second half of the 2022/23 season. However, his return to the Etihad Stadium was met with jeers from City fans when he made a substitute appearance during Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final defeat in April.

Initially struggling to secure a regular place under Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern, Cancelo has since become more involved in Thomas Tuchel’s plans. Bayern have an option to purchase Cancelo for €70 million once his loan expires this summer, but they have publicly deemed the price tag too high, although they would like to retain the versatile full-back.

Alongside Bayern, other prominent clubs across Europe have shown interest in Cancelo. Barcelona has been closely monitoring his situation and would consider entering the race for his signature if they could secure an initial loan deal. Arsenal, where Mikel Arteta previously worked with Cancelo at City, also have a keen interest in acquiring the player, believing he would fit well into their tactical setup.

Real Madrid, in need of a right-back option beyond Dani Carvajal, is another potential destination being explored by Cancelo’s camp.

Cancelo joined Manchester City in 2019 from Juventus, in a deal that saw Danilo move in the opposite direction. The transfer made him the most expensive right-back in history at the time. Initially facing competition from Kyle Walker, Cancelo played a rotational role before showcasing his versatility by becoming a regular at left-back.

He played a crucial part in City’s back-to-back Premier League title victories in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
