Liverpool and Arsenal played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield on Saturday.
The Gunners took a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but the home team fought back in the second half with goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Arsenal took the lead in the eighth minute after Liverpool’s defense was caught out by Bukayo Saka’s run down the right. Martin Odegaard received the ball and, after a slight deflection off Virgil van Dijk’s leg, Martinelli was there to tap in the opener.
Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Trent Alexander-Arnold looking out of sorts in midfield. The visitors doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Martinelli found space down the left and delivered a perfect cross for Jesus to head in unchallenged.
Liverpool were given a lifeline before halftime when Salah converted at the back post after Jordan Henderson turned Diogo Jota’s pass into the forward’s path. However, the first half ended on a sour note when an assistant referee appeared to elbow Liverpool’s Andy Robertson in the tunnel.

Salah had a chance to equalize early in the second half after Rob Holding brought down Jota in the box, but the Egyptian’s penalty went wide of the left post. Liverpool continued to press, with Aaron Ramsdale denying Salah and Darwin Nunez.
Based on the shots on target faced, the average goalkeeper would have been expected to concede 3.09 goals against Liverpool.

The Reds’ pressure eventually paid off in the 87th minute when Firmino, who had come off the bench, scored with a powerful header after Alexander-Arnold’s excellent cross. Liverpool had several chances to score a winner in the closing stages, but Ramsdale produced two outstanding saves to deny Salah and Ibrahima Konate.
The result leaves Arsenal in third place, six points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand, while Liverpool remain in fifth place, six points behind the Gunners. Both teams will now turn their attention to European competition, with Liverpool set to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and Arsenal set to face Villarreal in the Europa League.
Despite the draw, Liverpool will be disappointed not to have taken all three points after a dominant second-half performance.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had 22 shots to Arsenal’s 10 and controlled possession for 61% of the game. However, the Gunners will be pleased to have held on for a point after weathering a late storm from Liverpool.
Overall, it was a highly entertaining game that showcased the quality of both teams. Liverpool will need to improve their finishing if they are to challenge for a top-four spot, while Arsenal will hope to maintain their impressive form as they push for a Champions League place.
