The South West Coordinator, Albinism Network Association, Muyiwa Abegunde, on Monday reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the fight against discrimination and stigmatisation against people living with albinism.
He called on all states in the country, especially those in the South West to promote an inclusive society in line with the United Nations resolution on albinism matters.
The ANA coordinator, made this known in a press statement issued in Ado Ekiti, to announce that the South West ANA annual ‘June 13 UN International Albinism Awareness Day’ would be commemorated in Lagos on June 24.
He revealed noted that the theme of the event is, ‘Inclusion is strength’, was apt based on the crucial need to promote inclusiveness in government and in all spheres of life.
He said, “Specifically, on 18 December 2014, UN resolution was adopted, declaring 13 June as IAA Day. In adopting the resolution, the UN recognized the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of albinism in order to fight against global discrimination and stigma against persons with albinism.
“Since the first IAA Day in 2015, the international community has come together to highlight the continuing stigma and discrimination against persons with albinism, against which states must take action.
“IAA Day has also marked an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the albinism community. This year’s theme builds on last year’s theme of ensuring the inclusion of the voices of persons with albinism in all sectors of life. It emphasises the importance of inclusion of a diversity of groups from both within and outside the albinism community.
“This year’s ANA conference will adopt the principles on specific messages to increase awareness on albinism and effective leadership as a tool for promoting inclusive society,” he said.
