Aston Villa has announced the appointment of Monchi, the sporting director of Sevilla, as the president of football operations.
The 54-year-old Spaniard previously worked alongside Villa manager Unai Emery at Sevilla, where they achieved tremendous success, including three Europa League titles. Monchi’s appointment comes after Christian Purslow’s decision to step down as chief executive.
Expressing his excitement, Monchi stated, “I can’t wait to work with Unai Emery again, one of the best managers in football.”

During his tenure at Sevilla, the club won seven Europa League titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and the European Super Cup. Monchi, whose full name is Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, also worked as sporting director at Roma from 2017 to 2019, leading them to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The reunion between Monchi and Emery comes as Aston Villa secured a spot in next season’s Europa Conference League following their seventh-place finish in the Premier League.
Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris expressed delight at Monchi’s arrival, stating that it adds to the world-class team being assembled both on and off the pitch. Monchi is expected to assume his new role in July, pending the acquisition of a work permit.
