Aston Villa close to signing highly-rated sporting director from Sevilla

According to sources, Aston Villa are aiming to finalize a deal to bring Monchi, the popular sporting director of Sevilla, to the club.

Monchi, widely regarded as one of the best sporting directors in world football, has achieved great success with Sevilla since assuming the role in 2000.

He briefly departed Sevilla in 2017 for a two-year stint with Roma in Italy before returning. Monchi previously turned down an opportunity to join Arsenal and reunite with former Sevilla boss Unai Emery. However, sources have confirmed that Monchi will now have another chance to collaborate with Emery.

Emery and Monchi had a successful three-year partnership at Sevilla before Emery moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, but they have remained close. Villa has presented Monchi with an offer to join the club, following the recent departure of Christian Purslow and their failed attempt to secure Mateu Alemany from Barcelona, who initially agreed to the move but ultimately declined.

Sevilla, winners of the Europa League, are reportedly seeking compensation of nearly £2 million for Monchi, who still has one year remaining on his contract. It is believed that Monchi had informed Sevilla of his intention to leave this summer even before Villa approached him. Villa sources have confirmed that an offer has been made and they are now awaiting confirmation of Monchi’s decision.

Sevilla president Jose Castro expressed his hope of persuading Monchi to remain with the club in an interview with Canal Sur, stating that the situation had unfolded unexpectedly. He emphasized the desire for Monchi to reconsider, highlighting their previous successful collaboration and stating that there are no wounds that cannot be healed, particularly with someone like Monchi, who is considered part of the Sevilla family.

Castro also mentioned that he had previously assured Monchi that the doors would always be open for his return.
