Baena reveals death threats following Valverde allegations

Villarreal midfielder Alex Baena has spoken out against the “irreparable” and “unjustifiable” threats he has received after allegedly being assaulted by Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde following their LaLiga match on Saturday.

Reports claim that Baena was punched by Valverde while looking at his phone on his way to the Villarreal team bus. It is alleged that Valverde attacked Baena in response to derogatory remarks the latter made about his unborn child in a previous encounter between the sides, an accusation which Baena has vehemently denied.

In a statement released on Sunday, Villarreal confirmed that Baena had filed a police complaint and expressed their support for the Spain youth international.

Baena has since taken to social media to confirm that he has made an official police complaint, while also condemning the abuse he and his family have received as a result of the incident.

It reads: “Last Saturday I was attacked by a fellow colleague after the match against Real Madrid.

“After the event, various declarations came to light, presumably made by his entourage, in which it was said that I had wished pain for one of his family members.

“Since then, as it cannot be any other way, there has been no evidence that proves the facts that I am accused of.

“A misfortune was used to justify the aggression and there are lies that hurt more than blows.

“The damage that is being done to my family is irreparable and unjustifiable: threats, insults and even private messages wishing my family death.

“Yesterday I reported the case to the police. Let justice do its job. Now my only goal is to focus on my profession and help my club achieve its goals.”

The alleged assault has sparked widespread outrage in the footballing world, with many calling for an investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.

Both clubs are yet to make an official statement regarding the incident, and it remains to be seen whether any action will be taken against Valverde or anyone else involved in the altercation.
