The national president of the Hospital Equipment and Medical Devices Dealers Association of Nigeria, Ifeanyi Nwankwo, has promised to continue to discourage the importation and sale of fake and substandard medical devices in Nigeria.
Nawankwo said this at the 2022 Annual General Meeting and Award Giving Ceremony held in Lagos on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
He also lamented over the challenges members of the body faced in their businesses.
He said, “We will continue to discourage members from the importation and sale of fake and substandard medical devices in Nigeria. Our vision is to build a strong and formidable association that can protect and promote the Hospital Equipment business in Nigeria.
“Meanwhile, we are facing a lot of challenges. The foreign exchange is too high to do any reasonable business for now; there are too many impediments and registrations on registration and importation of devices in Nigeria. This impediment went from prolonged delay in the process of product registration. Some of the medical devices attract high customs tariffs. There is a high cost of transportation from the ports to the destination. Long debt from government institutions and agencies.
“There is a great need to protect our business from being taken over by foreign manufacturers and agents. We need a formidable union to be able to negotiate these challenges with the federal government and other relevant authorities.”
