The ongoing efforts aimed at tackling the menace and abuse of drugs in the country has received a boost as the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development donated sports items to a non-governmental organisation, Young Ambassadors Against Drug Abuse Initiative and Street Children Parliament.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq said the gesture was in line with promotion of the Ministry’s’ mandate and support for the NGO in its drive to engage the Girl-Child in sports.

Umar Farouq, who was represented by the Ministry’s Sports Manager, Kazeem Adenekan, said that engaging in sports activities, productivity will be high and healthy relationship will be built among children.

She further said that the donation is meant to catch the Girl-Child young and put them off the street and pledged that the Ministry will continue to give support and take care of the vulnerable.

The Country Coordinator, Young Ambassadors Against Drug Abuse Initiative and Street Children Parliament, Hajia Khaleel Usman Zaraih, in her submission, stated that the NGO wants to harness the potential of the Girl-child in sports, engage them so as to take them off the streets and away from vices.

She disclosed that there will be the all Girls’ tournament slated for 10th- 12th December, 2022 aimed of harnessing the potential of the Girl-child in ten communities in Abuja.

In the same vein, the Head, Special Duties in the Ministry, Madam Nadia Soso Muhammed, expressed the willingness of the Ministry to continue to partner with the organization in promoting the cause of the girl child.

Items donated are track suits, vests and canvasses.
