Dante Vanzeir, the New York Red Bulls forward, has been handed a six-game ban from MLS after using racist language in the game against the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday.

The match was stopped for 15 minutes following a confrontation involving Vanzeir, who has since apologized and admitted to making a mistake.

MLS has imposed an unspecified fine on Vanzeir and mandated that he undergo league-mandated training and education sessions and participate in a restorative practices program.

The league is also working with the two clubs and the MLS Players Association to offer support and resources to affected players and staff and improve its in-game protocol.

Vanzeir will be eligible to return to action against CF Montreal on May 20.

In a statement, Vanzeir took full responsibility for his actions and expressed his intention to work with organizations that address racial injustice.
