Kante buys Belgian club following big-money Saudi Arabia move

France midfielder N’Golo Kante has made an exciting move off the pitch, as he has acquired Belgian third-tier club Royal Excelsior Virton.

Starting from 1st July, he will replace Flavio Becca as chairman of the club, which is located near the Luxembourg border. Interestingly, this is the same date when Kante is set to join Saudi Arabia Pro League side Al-Ittihad after leaving Premier League club Chelsea.

“Flavio is obviously extremely happy to be able to hand over the keys of the club to N’Golo Kante,” said the club in a statement.

“[He is] a player of great class, not only for his footballing qualities but also and above all for his unanimously recognised human qualities.”

Royal Excelsior Virton is currently working on reclaiming their professional licence and is gearing up to compete in the Belgian National Division 1 during the 2023-24 season. While this division is two steps below the top-tier Belgian Pro League, it offers an exciting opportunity for the club to develop and grow. The financial details of Kante’s purchase have not been disclosed, but the club assures that it is debt-free.

Additionally, a board of directors will be assembled in the upcoming days to aid in managing the club’s affairs.

Kante’s football journey began in France’s amateur divisions, where he played for Boulogne before catching the attention of Caen in 2013. He gained prominence on the global stage when he played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s fairy-tale Premier League title win during the 2015-16 season before making a move to Chelsea.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Kante collected numerous prestigious titles, including the Champions League, Premier League, Europa League, and FA Cup. Furthermore, he played a crucial part in France’s triumph at the 2018 World Cup.

Kante’s purchase of Excelsior Virton follows a trend of professional players venturing into club ownership. Recently, Wilfried Zaha announced his deal to purchase AFC Croydon Athletic with the collaboration of rapper Stormzy, adding further excitement to the realm of football club ownership.

Hakim Ziyech is poised to finalize a transfer from Chelsea to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, as per reliable sources. Meanwhile, Kalidou Koulibaly is also nearing a move to the Middle East.

Chelsea is aiming to generate funds this summer, partly to offset the significant expenditure of the past two transfer windows and also to facilitate further business. Among the players made available for transfer are Ziyech and Koulibaly.

Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Blues, recently traveled to Saudi Arabia for meetings with various football officials, where the potential transfer of Chelsea’s peripheral players was discussed.

In the case of Koulibaly, negotiations are progressing for a move to Al-Hilal. The former Napoli center-back has declined a loan return to Serie A in favor of a permanent transfer to Saudi Arabia. A resolution on personal terms is nearing completion, and a three-year contract until 2026 is also being discussed for the 31-year-old.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has likewise agreed to a three-year contract with Al Ahli. The club is currently working on reaching an agreement with Chelsea regarding the transfer fee. The deal is expected to be finalized later this week.

Meanwhile, discussions with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang regarding a move to Saudi Arabia are ongoing, although a deal has not yet been reached. Romelu Lukaku has been targeted as a potential signing, but he expresses a strong desire to remain in Europe.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has also been mentioned in discussions, but at present, he is not interested in a move to the Middle East.

  • Saudi Pro League launches audacious move to land Paul Pogba

Saudi Pro League launches audacious move to land Paul Pogba

According to reports, Saudi Arabia’s Pro League is targeting Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba as their latest high-profile signing.

Karim Benzema recently left Real Madrid to join Al Ittihad on a three-year deal, and N’Golo Kante is rumored to be close to following suit. Cristiano Ronaldo made a notable move to the Middle East at the start of 2023, and it is expected that more prominent players will join him.

The Saudi Arabian officials are eager to attract elite talent from Europe, with Pogba being firmly on their radar. The 30-year-old has faced a tumultuous campaign, marred by injuries and controversies, since his return to Juventus from Manchester United last summer. He started just one Serie A game last season and faced disciplinary issues that led to his omission from Juventus’ squad for a Europa League knockout tie against Freiburg.

Despite his struggles, Pogba has expressed his desire to stay in Turin and prove his worth. However, Juventus themselves have experienced a turbulent season, including off-field controversies and a ten-point deduction for financial irregularities.

With the club potentially looking at a rebuild this summer and participating in the Europa Conference League qualifiers, Pogba’s departure, considering his high wages, could be an enticing option for Juventus.

The opportunity to sell Pogba to Saudi Arabia may prove tempting for Juventus, and such a move would be another significant coup for the Pro League.

So far, the big-name signings secured by Saudi Arabian clubs have been on free transfers. However, with financial support from the nation’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which also owns Newcastle United, the Pro League’s top four clubs (Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Nassr, and Al Hilal) will have no issue paying substantial fees for future targets.

Karim Benzema’s move to Saudi Arabia is reported to be worth over £250,000 per day without tax, and Kante is expected to receive a similar salary when he finalizes his transfer. If Pogba ends up making the move to the Middle East, he can expect to land a lucrative payday as well.

‘Time is right for new project’, Karim Benzema speaks on why he made Al-Ittihad move

Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has reached an agreement to join Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad on a lucrative three-year contract following his departure from Real Madrid.

According to reports, he will be paid 100 million euros per season, plus a bonus of 20 million euros to work as an ambassador for the 2030 World Cup, which Saudi Arabia is bidding to host.

The 35-year-old French striker had an illustrious 14-year career with Madrid, during which he racked up an impressive collection of 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles and four La Liga championships. Although his contract with Madrid was set to expire in a 2024, the club granted him an early exit.

Benzema’s goal-scoring prowess was evident during his time with Real Madrid, as he notched an impressive 354 goals, making him the second-highest goal scorer in the club’s history, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a remarkable 450 goals.

The move will see Benzema link up with Ronaldo who currently represents another Saudi club, Al-Nassr.

Speaking on his move to Al-Ittihad, Benzema acknowledged the quality of the league and the presence of talented players, including his friend Cristiano Ronaldo.

He stated that Ronaldo’s presence signifies the growing progress of the Saudi Pro League.

“It’s a good league and there are many good players,” said Benzema.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is already there, a friend which shows Saudi Arabia is starting to further progress its level. I am here to win, like I did in Europe.

Having accomplished remarkable feats in his career, Benzema believes the time is right for a fresh challenge and project outside of Spain and Europe. He is determined to contribute to the success of Al-Ittihad and is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

“I have been fortunate to achieve amazing things in my career and achieve everything I can in Spain and Europe. It now feels the time is right for a new challenge and project.”

Al-Ittihad is managed by former Wolves and Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

On Monday, it was announced that Al-Ittihad was one of the four leading Saudi Arabian clubs acquired by the country’s Public Investment Fund, which also holds ownership of Newcastle United. Alongside Al-Ittihad, Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, who have been strongly linked with Paris St-Germain’s Lionel Messi, are also under the ownership of the Public Investment Fund, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in football.

Brain Drain: 3,383 nurses, midwives move to UK in one year –Report

    Lara Adejoro

A total of 3,383 Nigerian-trained nurses and midwives were licensed to practice in the United Kingdom in one year, The Reportr Door reports.

This is according to the latest report on the number of professionals on the NMC register from April 1, 2022, to March 2023, obtained from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The report also showed that so far, 10,639 nurses and midwives practice in the UK.

The NMC is the regulator for nursing and midwifery in the UK and it maintains a register of all nurses, midwives, and specialist community public health nurses and nursing associates eligible to practice in the UK.

The WHO on March 8, 2023, listed Nigeria and other 54 countries as facing the most pressing health workforce challenges related to universal health coverage.

WHO said with the impact of Covid-19 and widespread disruptions to health services, health workers in the identified countries continued to seek better-paid opportunities in wealthier nations.

The WHO said of the 55 countries, 37 are in Africa, eight are in the Western Pacific region, six are in the Eastern Mediterranean region, three are in South-East Asia and one is in the Americas.

Thereafter, the UK government on March 23 placed Nigeria and 53 other countries on the red list of countries that should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers.

Meanwhile, the NMC report released on Wednesday showed that the number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates registered to practice in the UK has grown to a record total of 788,638.

The council said the year 2022 to 2023 saw the highest number of new joiners to the register in a single year – more than 52,000. These include 27,142 new professionals educated in the UK and 25,006 professionals educated around the world, mainly outside Europe.

The number of people leaving the professions fell slightly last year to less than 27,000. However, there are concerns about the future retention of staff, with 52 per cent of professionals who left the register saying they did so earlier than planned.

The data showed that Nigeria has the third highest number of foreign nurses and midwives working in the UK after India and the Philippines.

The report read in part, “76.8 per cent of internationally educated professionals (educated outside the UK and EU/EEA) (104,506 out of 136,116) are from India, the Philippines and Nigeria. In 2022–2023, the number of people educated in India overtook the number of professionals from the Philippines.”

The report noted further that since March 2018, there had been an increase in the number of persons joining the permanent register from the UK. It said between April 2022 and March 2023, 27,142 people from the UK joined the register.

The number of persons from the UK leaving the permanent register remained relatively similar to the previous year. In 2022–2023, no fewer than 22,997 people from the UK left the register.

The graphical analysis by the council on the number of Nigerian nurses and midwives that moved to the UK in 2018 was 2,796, but the number increased to 3,021 in 2019.

It further showed that by 2020, 3,684 Nigerian nurses and midwives were already practicing in the UK, and that the number increased to 4,310 in 2021, and 7,256 in 2022.

By March 31, 2023, the number of Nigerian nurses and midwives practicing in the UK is now 10,639.

Also, the number of nurses and midwives from the Philippines in the UK is now 45,472, while the number of nurses and midwives from India practicing in the UK is now 48,395.

Earlier in May, the President, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Michael Nnachi, said over 75,000 nurses and midwives left the country in five years to seek greener pastures as a result of poor wages and lack of decent work environment.

Nnachi decried the insecurity in the country, particularly the kidnapping of its members for ransom and violence against its members at the workplace while discharging their duties.

He had stated, “As a result of poor wages and lack of decent work environment, over 75,000 nurses and midwives have migrated from Nigeria within five years.

“The shortage of nurses and midwives, especially in certain areas of specialisation and geographic region, the increased rates of attrition and a chronic shortage of nursing personnel in the country increased workloads on nurses without an equivalent compensation, exposing them to more health hazards and compromising the quality of healthcare delivery.”

    NARD’s 128-day strike

Meanwhile, findings by our correspondent showed that the strike embarked upon by the National Association of Resident Doctors resulted in a loss of 128 working days between 2016 and 2023, which implied that resident doctors spent about four months on industrial action under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari to press home their demands.

The strikes were a result of the government’s failure to meet the demands of the doctors over the years.

Our correspondent gathered that the doctors, under the leadership of Dr Muhammad Askira, embarked on an 18-day strike in 2016. Askira listed some of their demands to include payments of members’ salaries and appropriate placement of members in states and federal tertiary hospitals across the nation.

Others were the reversal of sacked members in some hospitals as well as appropriate funding of the residency training programme.

In 2017, under the leadership of Dr John Onyebueze, resident doctors went on at least 21 days of nationwide strike due to the failure of the government to resolve the salary shortfall of 2016 and January to May 2017 among others.

In 2020, the doctors went on a one-week strike amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The doctors requested for the provision of personal protective equipment for all health workers, immediate reversal of the disengagement of 26 resident doctors in Jos University Teaching Hospital and the payment of all salaries owed them, in keeping with provisions of the Medical Residency Training Act; among others.

The association embarked on another strike from September 7 to 10, 2020, to press home its demands.

NARD went on strike on April 1, 2021. The strike was suspended on April 10 due to the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Another strike by the association began on August 2, 2021, and was suspended after 64 days.

Some of the demands made by NARD were the immediate salary payment to all house officers and an upward review of the hazard allowance to 50 per cent of consolidated salaries of all health workers, among others.

NARD ended its five-day warning strike on May 22, the latest by the union. It, however, said it would review the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving its concerns on June 2, 2023.

The doctors are demanding an immediate increment in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure to the tune of 200 per cent of the current gross salaries of doctors.

The doctors also want immediate massive recruitment of clinical staff in the hospitals and the immediate withdrawal of the bill seeking to compel medical and dental graduates to render five-year compulsory services in Nigeria before being granted full licence to practise, among others.

  • Messi at PSG: Time for world best to move on?

Messi at PSG: Time for world best to move on?

Lionel Messi arrived in France to a hero’s welcome, seen as the man who would deliver the Champions League for Paris Saint-Germain.

Two years on, the Argentinian is set to depart without having achieved that aim and having only produced his brilliant best in flashes.

It is difficult to qualify Messi’s time at PSG as a success, even if the move to the French capital helped set him up for the crowning glory of his career at last year’s World Cup and did no harm to the Qatar-owned club as a sporting brand.

At his unveiling in Paris in August 2021, Messi said winning the Champions League for the fifth time in his career was his “dream” and that he was in “the ideal place” to do it.

That was seductive talk for PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi, sat next to him, and for fans of the club who were desperate to see their team win European football’s greatest prize for the first time.

The previous season they had lost to Manchester City in the semi-finals, having been beaten by Bayern Munich in the 2020 final. Messi looked like the final piece in the jigsaw.

However, PSG has gone backwards with Messi. They were beaten in the Champions League last 16 by Real Madrid last season with Mauricio Pochettino in charge and suffered the same fate this year at Bayern’s hands with Christophe Galtier on the bench.

There must be a reason why Pep Guardiola did not push to bring an ageing Messi to City, despite his former coach at Barcelona often describing him as the best player of all time.

Guardiola’s side are through to this season’s Champions League final and playing at a level PSG could not currently hope to match, despite having Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the same side.

Having to accommodate those three attacking superstars has weakened PSG overall as a team.

Now they must try to build a more balanced side without a player who turns 36 this month and has been costing an estimated annual salary of 30 million euros ($32.1 million) after tax.

Early 2023, Messi was jeered at by some supporters at the Parc des Princes.

That was before he skipped training for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia to fulfill commitments as a tourism ambassador for the Gulf state.

A one-week suspension followed, and there was no prospect of Messi signing a new deal in Paris after that.

Messi had 32 goals in 74 games for PSG before Saturday’s final match this season against Clermont.

His first season in France was difficult as he struggled to settle having been uprooted from Barcelona.

He has sometimes struggled with the physical nature of the French league, but this season has been more memorable.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner developed a fine understanding with Mbappe, appearing to accept that the younger French star was the focal point of the team.

Messi has scored 16 Ligue 1 goals and set up 16 goals this season, comfortably the most assists of any player in France’s top flight.

He leaves having added two Ligue 1 title winner’s medals to his collection.

After all he won at Barcelona, and his World Cup triumph with Argentina, the French league may not mean that much to Messi when he looks back on his career.

As Vincent Duluc noted in France’s leading sports daily L’Equipe: “PSG have not been better than they were before because of him…and he seemed to have as much desire to play in Ligue 1 as he did to go to the dentist.”

Nevertheless, Messi has still left his mark on those who have worked with him and come up against him.

He was nominated for this season’s French player of the year prize, even if he missed out on the award to Mbappe.

“I have had the privilege to coach the best player in the history of football,” said Galtier this week.

“This year he has been an important part of the team. I have never thought that the criticism of him was justified at all, when he is 35 and there is a World Cup in the middle of the season and yet I think he has scored or set up more than 40 goals in all competitions.

“It has been a great privilege not to coach him but to accompany him throughout the season.”

Now it is time for Messi and PSG to move on.

Tinubu, APC oppose move to merge petitions

The All Progressive Congress and its standard bearer, Bola Tinubu on Monday, rejected the proposal to consolidate the three surviving petitions being heard at the Presidential Election Petition Court wherein the outcome of the February 25 presidential election is being challenged.

Earlier on Saturday, Chairman of the panel, Justice Haruna Tsammani referred counsels to the petition to consult paragraph 50 of the 1st Schedule of the Electoral Act on the idea of consolidating the three surviving petitions to determine them as one.

It directed the counsels to consult their clients and report back the outcome of the meeting.

Upon the resumed sitting on the matter, Counsel for the APC, Charles Edosomwam SAN stated that consolidating the petitions would be against the interest of justice.

He said the justice factor is a major issue for consideration adding that “the grounds are different and the wide range of issues raised by parties are also different.”

He said, “Major issues before this court will be lost like a pin in a haystack” if the consolidation is considered.

“Moreover, it will be pragmatically impossible for the respondent to effectively defend the case.

“It is our position that the issue of justice cannot be sacrificed at the altar of convenience.”

In a similar vein, Tinubu, through his team of lawyers led by Akin Olujinmi SAN stated that consolidating all the petitions would strongly affect his ability to defend all the issues that were raised against him.

He asserted that the petitioners are seeking different reliefs.

Olujinmi said, “The issue of justice should be a restraint on the power of this court to exercise its discretion in granting the order for consolidation.”

He argued that the provision of the Electoral Act the court referred to, was not absolute.

“My lords, when the exercise of power is subject to the limitation of some conditions, then it cannot be said that the exercise is mandatory.”

“There are issues raised in one petition that are not there in others. The issues vary. The same goes for evidential issues that are based on pleadings that have been exchanged by parties in this case.”

“We want to make it clear at this stage that it will be absolutely difficult for us to consent to consolidation of the petitions.”

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission said it would leave the issue of the consolidation to the court’s discretion.

Although, the PEP Court had begun the proceeding with five aggrieved parties challenging the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

However, the Action Alliance withdrew its case with the Action Peoples Party following suit two days later, thus leaving at the moment, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and the Allied Peoples Movement as the three surviving petitioners.
