Tottenham Hotspur has announced that it’s working with the police to investigate an alleged incident of racist abuse directed at Son Heung-min during their recent Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

A video circulating on social media shows a man in the Palace section of the stadium making a racist gesture towards Son as he walked by.

In response, Tottenham issued a statement expressing their awareness of the racial abuse allegation and condemning any form of discrimination. The club emphasized that such behavior has no place in society or within football. They have pledged to work alongside the Metropolitan Police and Crystal Palace to identify the individual involved and take appropriate action.

The statement also highlighted their commitment to ensuring that the perpetrator faces the strongest possible penalties, citing a similar incident earlier in the season where Son experienced racial abuse at Chelsea.

The club has shared evidence with the police and has stated that the culprit, once identified, will face a ban from the club. They have made it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated within their ranks.

This incident follows a previous occurrence in August 2022 when Thomas Burchell, a Chelsea fan, was charged with a racially aggravated public order offense and received a stadium ban for making a racist gesture towards Son. Burchell was also handed a three-year ban from attending live football matches and fined a total of £1,107.

Despite the unfortunate incident, Tottenham managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace, with Harry Kane scoring the winning goal. The win ended a five-game winless streak and propelled Tottenham back up to sixth place in the Premier League.

The investigation into the racist abuse towards Son Heung-min serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges football faces in eradicating discrimination from the sport.

Both clubs and the authorities are determined to take swift and decisive action to ensure that such incidents are dealt with firmly, sending a strong message that racism will not be tolerated in football or society as a whole.
