The United Nations Children’s Fund has inaugurated the distribution of sanitary pads to 60 schools in Kano State.

Also distributed were learning materials and safety kits to enable conducive learning environment.

Chief of UNICEF Kano Office, Mr. Rahama Farah, while speaking at the State Universal Basic Education Board headquarters in the state about the initiative said the mission was to help children survive, thrive and develop to fulfil their potential.

He noted that UNICEF supports government efforts to provide basic education, adding that education remains an important pillar that can help children attain their full potential.

He noted that the education sector in Nigeria was facing a number of challenges, which had impacted negatively on learning.

He said, “To improve access to education, UNICEF has been supporting the government to address the challenge of unsafe learning environment.

“For instance, under the Girl Education Program (GEP3), UNICEF supported the training of School-Based Management Committee members (SBMC), teachers and pupils in Kano and Katsina states on School Safety and Early Warning Systems.”

While urging the beneficiaries to make the best use of the items, Farah, appealed to the Kano State House of Assembly to pass the bill on child protection currently pending before it.

SUBEB Executive Secretary, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, commended UNICEF for assisting the government in achieving its educational goals.

Represented by SUBEB Permanent Commissioner, Alhaji Kabir Ahmad, Hayyo expressed delight over the materials donated and promised that the distribution would be closely monitored and judiciously used.
