  • Southgate urges Folarin Balogun to be patient for England call-up

Southgate urges Folarin Balogun to be patient for England call-up

Gareth Southgate has advised on-loan Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun who is impressing at Reims this season, to be patient regarding an England call-up.

Balogun is eligible for both the United States and Nigeria and visited the US during the recent international break.

Southgate has cited Balogun’s lack of Premier League experience as the reason for him being overlooked for an England call-up at this time, and he is not prepared to offer him a spot in the squad just to secure his international future.

While Southgate has praised Balogun, he noted the need to weigh up his potential against other young players such as Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, and Eddie Nketiah, who have already made an impact in the Premier League.

Southgate acknowledged that offers from other countries will come, as many players are eligible for multiple national teams, but emphasized the importance of making young players feel wanted and part of the England squad.

“It is up to the player to weigh up where his heart feels. Is he prepared to wait a little bit for an opportunity if he backs himself and feels he can push his way into our squad?” he said.

“Because anybody who has followed us will know that we will give young players a chance. So, we cannot go and give first-team call-ups to someone just because we don’t want them to go somewhere else.

“We like Flo. He has obviously not had an opportunity in the Premier League yet, so we have to weigh up those goals to Ivan [Toney], for example, or Ollie Watkins. Or Eddie Nketiah, who has done really well with the opportunity he has had at Arsenal.

“I know there are going to be offers as 80 percent of our players can play for more than one country now, and we are not arrogant expecting everybody to want to come to play for England. We have to make them feel wanted and feel part of that.

“Ultimately, it does not matter what you say. If you cannot give them the opportunity now, then some people are patient and want to see it through and are prepared to wait a bit and others want it now and I can totally understand that.”

Ultimately, Southgate believes it is up to the player to decide where his heart lies and whether he is willing to be patient for an opportunity with England.

  • England nurses to pause strikes during new govt talks

England nurses to pause strikes during new govt talks

Nurses in England will pause months of strike action over pay after the UK government agreed to hold “intensive talks”, both sides said on Tuesday.

Members of the Royal College of Nursing had been due to walk out for 48 hours next Wednesday, the latest in a series of stoppages unprecedented in the union’s 106-year history.

They are part of a wave of UK industrial action which has seen workers ranging from paramedics to train drivers to teachers go on strike over the last year amid decades-high inflation.

Nurses and ambulance drivers have even walked out on the same day for the first time.

The UK government has been refusing to discuss pay levels for the current fiscal year, insisting salaries have already been set for public sector workers by independent pay review bodies.

Ministers also argue that the country, which is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis as inflation remains stubbornly above 10 percent, cannot afford increases at or near these decades-high rates.

But in a joint statement Tuesday with the RCN, the Department of Health and Social Care said the two camps had agreed “to enter a process of intensive talks”.

“Both sides are committed to finding a fair and reasonable settlement that recognises the vital role that nurses and nursing play in the National Health Service and the wider economic pressures facing the United Kingdom,” it said.

“The talks will focus on pay, terms and conditions, and productivity-enhancing reforms.”

The joint statement noted that Health Secretary Steve Barclay will meet with RCN representatives on Wednesday to begin the discussions.

“The Royal College of Nursing will pause strike action during these talks,” it added.

Health staff says wages that have not kept pace with inflation over the past decade, combined with the current cost of living crisis, have left them struggling to pay their bills.

Opinion polls have shown broad public support for the nurses’ plight, with a majority backing their walkouts for better pay. 18 registered political parties.

  • Spurs boss Conte returns to England following gallbladder surgery

Spurs boss Conte returns to England following gallbladder surgery

    Antonio Conte

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has travelled back the UK from Italy on Wednesday, having recently taken time off to undergo gallbladder surgery.

Conte became unwell with cholecystitis in late January, an illness where gallstones cause inflammation of the gallbladder leading to severe abdominal pain.

The Spurs boss underwent surgery in Turin to remove his gallbladder last week and remained in the city, where his family continues to be based, to recuperate. Once the operation had been completed, he quickly informed fans of its success.

Conte has also stayed in touch throughout his time off and was on the phone to Harry Kane within minutes of the final whistle at the end of the weekend’s victory over Manchester City, a game which saw Kane break Jimmy Greaves’ record to become Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer.

At this moment in time, it remains unclear what kind of role Conte will have in the build-up to the team’s Premier League clash with Leicester on Saturday. But there remains hope that he will be with the squad at the King Power Stadium.

Assistant coach Cristian Stellini has been taking charge in his absence.

Since losing the north London derby to Arsenal and throwing away a 2-0 half-time lead against Manchester City, Spurs have won their last two Premier League games to go within a point of the top four, albeit having played a game more than the clubs directly above them.

After the Leicester game, Conte will return to Italy with his team as Spurs take on AC Milan in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

  • Single-use plastic items to be banned in England

Single-use plastic items to be banned in England

England will ban a wide range of single-use plastic items from October including plates and cutlery in order to limit their “devastating” effect on the environment, the government said on Saturday.

The new legislation will also cover single-use trays and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers, the environment ministry announced.

The department said England uses around 2.7 billion items of single-use cutlery per year, mostly plastic, with only one in 10 items recycled.

Environmental policy is a devolved issue for the governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK government in London sets policy in England.

Similar legislation has already been passed in Scotland and Wales.

Repeated breaches of the ban could end up constituting a criminal offence with offenders running the risk of a fine, said the department.

“We all know the absolutely devastating impacts that plastic can have on our environment and wildlife,” said UK Environment Secretary Therese Coffey.

“We have listened to the public and these new single-use plastics bans will continue our vital work to protect the environment for future generations,” she added.

The ban will not extend to supermarket ready meals, said the government.

Matt Hood, managing director at supermarket chain Co-op, welcomed the ban.

“We have been at the forefront of eradicating unnecessary plastic, so it is encouraging to see this ban being introduced and we have already removed plastic cutlery from our food to go, offering wooden forks instead,” he said.

But environmental group Greenpeace UK said the plans did not go far enough.

“Whilst it’s welcome that the government’s finally banned certain items, we’re dealing with a plastic flood, and this is like reaching for a mop instead of turning off the tap,” said Megan Randles, political campaigner for Greenpeace UK.

“It’s time to stop pandering to industry lobbyists; stop promoting false solutions; and stop dumping our plastic waste in countries that have done the least to cause the climate crisis,” she added.

  • Southgate to remain as England manager through Euro 2024

Southgate to remain as England manager through Euro 2024

The Football Association has confirmed that Gareth Southgate will stay on as England manager through to Euro 2024.

The 52-year-old already had a contract for another two years but was considering whether to walk away after six years in charge following England’s World Cup quarterfinal exit to France in Qatar.

It was reported on Saturday that after lengthy deliberations with his family and friends, Southgate was leaning towards staying and that decision was finalised in an FA statement on Sunday.

“We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign,” FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said.

“Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”

Southgate became England boss after Euro 2016 and oversaw a dramatic improvement in the team’s fortunes, reaching the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup before guiding the Three Lions to last summer’s delayed Euro 2020 final, losing to Italy in a penalty shootout.

England were knocked out by France at the quarterfinal stage in Qatar and although he has a contract through to the end of 2024, he was considering whether he was the right man to continue in the role.

Southgate was concerned about the fan sentiment towards him after England’s relegation from the top tier of the Uefa Nations League, a campaign which saw him booed by his own fans as they slumped to a 4-0 home defeat to Hungary in June and then again away from home against Italy in September.

However, the FA wanted Southgate to stay on and sources have told ESPN that multiple players have contacted him to express their support for him leading the squad into the Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

England’s next matches are in March with two Euro 2024 qualifiers away to Italy and at home to Ukraine.

World Cup 2022: England beat Senegal 3-0 to set up France clash

England eased past Senegal with a 3-0 victory to set up a blockbuster World Cup quarter-final clash against defending champions France.

The Three Lions struggled to get going in the early stages and looked vulnerable at the back, but Jordan Henderson’s goal was a timely one before Harry Kane, Golden Boot winner four years ago, netted his first goal of the tournament just before the break.

Bukayo Saka netted for the third time in Qatar to put England in complete charge and they saw out the remainder of the match with minimal fuss, attention now swiftly turning to the ominous form of Kylian Mbappe.
