Saudi Pro League: Edouard Mendy bids Chelsea farewell as he signs for Al Ahli

    Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy

Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has bid farewell to Chelsea after a successful three-year stint, as he completes a move to Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper follows in the footsteps of former Chelsea teammates Kalidou Koulibaly and N’Golo Kante, who also departed during this transfer window to join clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Mendy’s time at Chelsea was marked by remarkable achievements. He played a pivotal role in the club’s triumph in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League, and throughout his tenure, he kept an impressive tally of 49 clean sheets in 105 appearances. Mendy’s outstanding performances earned him recognition as UEFA’s goalkeeper of the season and the Best FIFA Men’s Keeper for 2021.

Having joined Chelsea from French side Rennes in 2020, Mendy’s international career with Senegal was also noteworthy, as he contributed to their victory in the Africa Cup of Nations. In the final, he made a crucial save during the penalty shootout that helped his country defeat Egypt.

However, Mendy’s situation at Stamford Bridge changed when Thomas Tuchel was replaced by Graham Potter as manager in September 2022. He gradually lost favor under Potter’s management and ended up serving as the backup goalkeeper to Kepa Arrizabalaga. As a result, Mendy only made three starts in the Premier League last season.

Nonetheless, Mendy’s move to Al-Ahli offers him a fresh start and new opportunities in the Saudi Pro League. Chelsea fans will fondly remember his contributions and the trophies he helped the club secure during his time with the Blues.

In a statement on Chelsea’s website, the Premier League club said the goalkeeper was a “hugely likeable character”.

“Having started his career in the lower tiers of French football – and even spending several months without a club – Mendy rose to the pinnacle of European football with Chelsea,” said the club.

“A hugely likable character on and off the pitch, he will always have a place in our history for his significant contributions to our 2021 Champions League triumph.

“For that, and for everything else, we are grateful. Good luck, Edou!

Mauricio Pochettino signs three-year contract as new Chelsea boss

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a three-year contract to become the new Chelsea head coach.

The Argentine is in Spain but expects to start at Stamford Bridge next week, with the official announcement on his appointment expected in the coming days.

Chelsea have been searching for a new manager since sacking Graham Potter last month. Pochettino verbally agreed to accept the job earlier this month and will be the third permanent manager to work under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake capital ownership since they bought the club last year.

Pochettino who has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer, emerged as the favourite after Chelsea held talks with the former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann, who was sacked by Bayern Munich in March.

The former Tottenham manager will need patience as Chelsea look to rebuild after a difficult season. The 51-year-old will inherit a bloated squad at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, who will not be in Europe next season, have spent close to £600m on new signings in the past year. They will need to sell players this summer.

FG signs MoU on safe, nutritious diets for school children, vulnerable groups

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition to enhance access to safe and nutritious diets in the country.

GAIN Nigeria Country Director, Dr. Michael Ojo, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

He explained that the MoU, which focuses on school children and vulnerable households, seeks to support the effective implementation of the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme initiated by the Federal Government.

Dr. Ojo noted that it would also support other efforts aimed at enhancing access to safe and nutritious diets among children of primary school age children and women from vulnerable households, generally classified as poor and vulnerable.

According to him, the partnership will foster an all-inclusive collaboration to address malnutrition and improve food safety in the country.

He said, “Affordability has been identified as a key factor that limits access to safe and nutritious diets, especially among vulnerable households and low-income consumers.

“Lack of healthier diets leads to increased malnutrition in all its forms, which imposes avoidable development consequences on the nation.

“It stretches the economy and places an additional burden on the individual, household and community safety nets.

“The prevalence of malnutrition in Nigeria goes beyond the ability to purchase food. It is ingrained in those structural, cultural and psychological predispositions that hinder Nigerians from considering nutrition as a priority in light of other challenges.

“With the increasing level of multidimensional poverty in Nigeria, it is expected that malnutrition at all levels will also rise.”

Dr. Ojo said the FG and GAIN are committed to working together to explore other viable opportunities for resources and inputs that would ensure the actualisation of the NHGSFP core objectives.

GAIN is a Swiss-based foundation, launched at the United Nations in 2022 to tackle human suffering caused by malnutrition.

  • Signs your spouse is suffering from election stress disorder

Signs your spouse is suffering from election stress disorder

    Elizabeth Badejo

Elections have been known to cause divisions between couples, family members, friends, and even communities. Participating in the electoral process is laudable, with adults of voting age looking forward to putting their thumbs on paper. However, the season can be seen as a period when many people experience high-stress levels and feelings of uncertainty.

In the build-up to the election, it is possible that some people’s anxiety will hit the roof, leaving them worried, confused, and anxious about who to cast their votes for, among other uncertainty and apprehension. Men are more likely to experience all the negative signs associated with the season than women, therefore it is important to look out for signs if you are worried that your husband may be suffering from a stress-related disorder caused by politics.

POLITICAL CHANGES CAN AFFECT PEOPLE’S LIVES

Election season is when friends and family members fall out without even realising what they are doing to themselves considering the fact that elections come and go and their lives will have to go back to normal again. A study showed that about 33% of people living in the United Kingdom expressed that the event of Brexit had a negative effect on their health and well-being due to its impact on the British economy. This is an indication that policy and political social change, such as an election, have the capacity to affect people’s lives in different ways. It is not different in Nigeria where an election is an opportunity many people look forward to in order to restore the hope they may have lost; this can cause post-election stress if people feel disappointed after an election and this is not limited to any particular age or gender within the society.

    LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA PARTICIPATION

Many political party enthusiasts spend a lot of time on social media expressing their opinion and condemnation of those in opposition and this can sometimes lead to abuse and derogatory conversations when not checked. Your spouse may show signs of neglect of duty, insomnia and exhaustion in the morning before work due to sleepless nights spent discussing election matters which can be consuming and exhausting, especially when you have to go to work the next morning. If your spouse belongs to this category of people who spend a considerable amount of time on social media responding to opposing political views, this can trigger his emotions, impacting his marital relationship and making him emotionally absent at home even when he is physically present. This is a good time to have a conversation with your spouse about your concerns and the negative impact on his health in the long run and your well-being too.

TAKE A BREAK FROM POLITICAL DISCUSSION

One of the challenges your political enthusiast spouse may have to contend with during the election season is the insensitivity of the discussions, which can create disagreement and hostility and impact people’s behaviour negatively. If you have noticed a change in your spouse’s behavior, such as unusual aggression, short temper or irrational behaviour, these are signs that your spouse is experiencing stress disorder and you are in the best position to support him. You have the power to break your spouse away from political discussions at home by discouraging him from discussing politics if it does not end well. You can also find a way to divert the conversation if he is easily triggered by your opinion and the opinion of others, which contradicts his political arguments. However, be mindful of your spouse’s feelings and allow him to have his voice even when you do not share similar political views. Whatever you do, do not allow politics to contest the peace in your home.

  • Diphtheria patients show kidney failure signs, brain complications – Doctor

Diphtheria patients show kidney failure signs, brain complications – Doctor

    Lara Adejoro

The Kano State Case Manager for the diphtheria outbreak, Dr. Salma Suwaid, said patients with diphtheria are presenting with renal failure, slow heart rate, low blood platelet count and neurological complications.

Dr. Suwaid said the state recorded 35 cases of Sinus Bradycardia. 15 patients presented with thrombocytopenia and active bleeding, 25 cases with acute kidney Injury, and 11 cases with neurological complications.

Sinus bradycardia is a heart rhythm that’s slower than expected (fewer than 60 beats per minute in an adult) but is otherwise normal. It’s sometimes a symptom of certain heart conditions or problems, but it can also be a sign that a person is in very good shape because of regular exercise.

Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which you have a low blood platelet count.

Suwaid disclosed this on Monday at a webinar organised by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention with the theme ‘Diptheria outbreak in Nigeria: Vaccination Response.’

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium called Corynebacterium species that affects the nose, throat, and sometimes, skin of an individual.

Diphtheria spreads easily between people through direct contact with infected people, droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.

The ongoing diphtheria outbreak and the associated high-case fatality which began in December 2022, are due to a combination of low vaccination coverage, and the absence of diphtheria antitoxin during the early stage of the outbreak.

So far, the infection has been confirmed in Kano, Yobe, Lagos, Osun, and Katsina states.

The outbreak has also claimed 61 lives in Kano state as of March 2, 2023.

Suwaid, who spoke on the ‘Management of diphtheria cases in Nigeria: The Kano experience” said a total of 783 patients have also been on admission so far. Of this number, 360 were females and 423 were males.

She said “We had 35 cases (57.3 per cent) with Sinus Bradycardia amongst 61 deaths as of March 2, 2023, out of which 14 presented with SB while 21 presented with SB, thrombocytopenia and renal failure.

“Patients with SB and circulatory collapse are placed on oxygen therapy, and antishock treatment using saline, atropine, and dopamine.

“Cases of isolated SB in otherwise stable patients are just monitored and given a high dose of Diphtheria Antitoxin.”

Suwaid, who is also a Consultant Paediatrician added that patients with thrombocytopenia rapidly deteriorated within 24 hours due to a lack of availability of plasma or platelet concentrates.

She said all the patients with thrombocytopenia died, making up 40 per cent of the total mortality.

She said out of the 25 cases of AKI recorded, 11 cases died and four had dialysis.

“Fourteen cases were managed conservatively and were discharged. All the patients that died had a triad of thrombocytopenia-bradycardia-renal failure. A high dose of DAT in patients with mildly impaired renal status and without any comorbidity was found to give a better outcome. We had two cases of nephrotic syndrome.

“We had 11 cases of neurological complications. All cases presented with progressive weakness, bulbar palsy, changes in voice, inability to swallow fluids, and ptosis. One case has associated paraesthesias. All the cases were readmitted after being managed and discharged,” she highlighted.

Ptosis is when the upper eyelid droops over the eye. Ptosis can limit or even completely block normal vision.

The expert, however, called for a strong surveillance system for early detection to mitigate their propagation at early stages.

She also recommended, “Hands-on skill training of doctors at the Diphtheria Treatment Unit by cardiologists with expertise in pacemaker insertion, bedside electrocardiogram monitoring which will enable early detection of cardiac abnormalities, provision of IV erythromycin and setting up of intensive care unit which should be manned by an intensivist and to make available all the necessary equipment needed for fresh frozen plasma/platelets supply and storage.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa said most confirmed cases of the infection are either not vaccinated or under-vaccinated.

“It is, however, important to document peculiar diphtheria cases so we can share it and it becomes a constant reference material,” Adetifa said.

They are a law for the establishment of the Yobe State Emergency Medical Ambulance Service and another for the establishment of the Yobe State Healthcare and Health-Related Facilities Inspection and Monitoring Agency.
